I was daunted by the 19 odd hours of listening time I’d need to dedicate to this book. I expected it’d take me a few days at least. Yet here I am the following day having done nothing but listen and feeling a bit sleep deprived 🥱🎧

This is a book like nothing I’ve read before, told from the pov of our dead protagonist Lan, who is stuck mainly as a crow in the in between, because she makes a promise to try to be there for her grandson.

Lan has taught her open minded family to dream lucidly, dream with intent and they’ll meet her there. She spends years learning to navigate the in between and learning to connect her threads. Until they all desperately need her. She cannot make changes but she can influence their direction. Lucid dreaming fascinates me, do you ever dream so vividly that you’re actually in a place and you know you were there? so while the book is in the sci fi fantasy genre, I believed it. I believe that magic.

The story for the living descendants of Lan was a bit of everything, I was unsure if I’d get my head around the politics, the coding, the gaming etc, but Manda Scott’s writing simplified it in a way that I had a full grasp of the goings on without feeling lectured. There were a lot of interesting crossovers in the timeline, I wonder did you see these in your dreams, Manda?

There are a million dystopian fantasy’s out there that are wholly believable, but this is different, it takes us from dystopia to utopia and it is so full of hope, for a dreamer like me who truly believes we can leave a better world for future generations if we can come together and overcome the bad (with a little dreamed guidance) it was truly inspiring.

Thought provoking, uplifting and truly something special. Dream deeply, rise up strong, change is coming 💭

The narration was performed by Clare Corbett, who handled the nuances of the story with ease, a brilliant performance.

Manda Scott has long been high up on my list of new authors to try out and her Boudica series sits patiently on my shelves awaiting it's turn on my vast TBR list once I have caught up with some other ongoing series. So when an opportunity to try out a standalone audio book presented itself I jumped Any Human Power to the from of the queue.

Although I had first heard of Manda Scott for her historical fiction, I was very excited to see what she might do with something that would be considered contemporary dystopian / utopian urban fantasy.

I was not disappointed, never have I read anything so completely grounded in the absolutely right now, utterly thought provoking in terms of everything wrong with the way society and politics is today and yet hopeful and optimistic for positive changes. This book by coincidence releases right in time prior to a UK General election in July 2024 and could not be more relevant.

Manda Scott has sublime prose which is wonderfully descriptive yet completely accessible. Her ability to weave in the fantastical and present themes and ideas that compliment the narrative without being overbearing or preaching makes me draw comparisons to Ursula K Le guin and I can think of no higher praise than that! A story that centres around a time travelling afterlife crow avatar that influences World of Warcraft tournaments, family dramas and voting reform seems an utterly bizarre premise but Scott makes it a completely profound and uplifting experience.

As I have consumed this in audio book format I must take a moment to mention the incredible performance by Clare Corbett who elevated this story to another level, it is always great when a narrator really connects with the source material and is able to understand the tone and emotional weight of the scenes and events, all of the characters were distinctly portrayed and voiced brilliantly. I have not heard this audio book narrator before but would definitely consider anything else she does.

Overall, very impressive stuff and confirms that this is going to be an author that I will enjoy no matter what the genre or subject is, I can't wait to start Boudica or anything else that Manda Scott has previously published.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bolinda Audio for providing an audio arc in exchange for an honest review. Any Human Power is available to purchase right now!

To say that this book turned out to be more than I expected is an understatement. I went into it thinking that its primary purpose was to explore what lies beyond the veil; the journey we take after death and the mythology that surrounds it. Then, somewhere around 25% in, it imploded into a ruthless, forensic exposé of the power of the internet and the people, governments, agencies and corporations that control it. THEN, it becomes all about the planet and the issues with modern politics This novel encompasses such a broad diversity of themes, from racism through misogyny to snuff porn, politics and ecology, technology and philosophy, that although it’s touted as an ‘Eco-thriller’, this feels like the biggest undersell, ever. This story is huge. It’s relevant, disturbing, informed and a massive wake-up call. It’s a conjuring of future possibilities and a stark warning of what could happen if we blindly carry on burying our heads in the sand. One of the most thought provoking books I’ve read in a long time. Five stars just doesn’t seem enough, frankly.
The audiobook was awesome and perfectly narrated by Clare Corbett. It published on 30 May.
Many thanks to Bolinda Audio and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to an arc.

Any Human Power is a mind breaking and visionary thriller written by Manda Scott (also known for her Boudica and Rome series), published by September Publishing. The last promise made by Lan before dying will tie her soul to following the events that will mark her family and how their fight against a corrupt system will put them on the edge of the knife; a novel that couldn't have chosen a better date to be published, seeing how Great Britain is in the process for a general election.

While Lan and her promise are the conductive thread that keeps up tied to the plot, in reality, this is a story about the family and their fight, all starting from the moment Lan's granddaughter is put in the spotlight for the world; an unequal fight against the own system that shows the corruption plaguing it, a giant that uses its resources to silence and ridicule her and her family. Lan suffers from the distance the difficulties and the struggles of her family, and all eventually ends with the worst possible outcome.
However, even if this means the lowest point for the family, it's not a defeat, but the point that will act as the foundation for a movement that wants to destroy and regenerate the system into a real democracy. Power to the wise, and wisdom to the powerful, as they would say; but not by breaking it, but by working inside it to create something better, something that is only achievable by the collective effort.

I don't really want to spoil much more about this book, because I feel part of the charm is about experiencing it; feeling how your previous thoughts are challenged by Scott's proposal. The prose is excellent, creating an agile and fluid reading experience, transmitting not only the nuances of the real world plot, but also the mysticism and the power in the oneiric one.

If you are looking for a different read, which can't come in a better moment than this one, Any Human Power, by Manda Scott, will be a great choice. It was an experience, and definitely, a book I recommend.

An absolute horror of a book that I only kept reading because I was so incredulous about the ridiculous story line. The family all speak with one, arrogant voice and I kept reading to see if they ever showed any humility.

Unlike anything I've ever read, this felt like three novels in one. Extremely ambitious and enormous in its scope, this is an exploration of politics, democracy, internet culture with all its pitfalls as well as family and generational gaps.

Any Human Power begins with Lan, grandmother of the British family we're following, who is in the process of dying. Instead of passing away completely though, she decides to stay in the in-between as a crow, watching over her family as she promised her grandson Finn. What kicks off the action though is when fifteen years later, one his younger twin siblings, Kaitlyn, tweets a statement that triggers an international storm of outrage and turns the old establishment against herself. Thus begins the fight for a better future.

It avoids any attempt of categorisation. I started reading this thinking it'd be science fiction, based on the blurb and cover as well as the fact that the title is drawn from a quote of Ursula Le Guin:

"We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings."

It's food for thought and thinking Manda Scott really did. She utilises fantastical elements to create an utterly real tale about the times we're living in today. Lan is able to reach out to the members of the family who are able to have lucid dreams and that connection shows us the power of generational change and development. The intense parts of this almost read like dystopian fiction, but it's too contemporary (mostly set in 2023) and realistic to feel like a made-up alternative to our world.

It kept me on my toes. I don't want to get too much into what happens, because not knowing is part of what made reading this feel special, but let me tell you that it takes a couple of extremely radical turns that completely changes to direction this is heading into. I had no idea what would be coming up next, but I felt enough of a bond to the family that I was keen to find out. I admit the last quarter or so got a little institutional and political in a way that I thought was important for the points Scott was trying to make, but a little less fun to read, but ultimately it did make everything come together beautifully.

It's a read for the present as much as is it for the future. I don't think it's a coincidence this is coming out shortly before UK's general election in July 2024, as this is Scott's take on what the problems of our society are these days are. I was pleasantly surprised with how she does not only invite the reader to think about solutions, but offers up quite specific ideas of her own. You might agree or disagree with them, but I enjoyed forming opinions on her vision of the future. Overall she finds a good balance: it's shocking and alarming, yet she writes in a hopeful tone that reminds us of how much power we as individuals can hold.

As a little snarky side note – I do kind of wish this had a classier cover. I think this one looks kind of ... cheap? I admit I probably wouldn't have picked this up seeing this in stores and I don't think its genetic nature does the uniqueness of the book justice. Nonetheless: Thanks for September Publishing for getting in touch and sending me an Advance Reading Copy of this!

3.5/5

I hope I can succeed in writing a good faith, but honest review about a book I had complicated feelings about.

I firstly want to thank Manda Scott for this tremendous effort. It is clear that she put a lot of love, inspiration, imagination, and care into this book. She is someone who is clearly dreaming a better future for all of life on Earth, which I admire and commend and am grateful for.

Unfortunately, I really struggled to connect with this book in spite of my agreement with so much of what is embedded within, and that is primarily due to my feeling that all of the characters were avatars for the author’s voice rather than living, breathing people that I cared about. Like other reviewers, I feel that the characters were more manifesto than human. This book touches on so many important themes, but when the tone changes to become a very political story, it felt like those themes became an afterthought. I only wish I had connected with it more emotionally, because the ultimate message is very important, and the concept of “thrutopian” fiction is profound and necessary.

I also just found myself feeling like the plot was very unrealistic and too contemporary for my tastes. There was a mythic resonance to this book that was drowned out by the WoW and social media references. I think had Scott leaned more into character development and the mythic, subterranean story that is within this book, the story would have been a triumph.

I think some people, particularly British people, will really enjoy this book and be able to follow the minutiae of the political British drama. Other sorts of people will feel seen by the important tidbits of information within this book.

Ultimately, from a story perspective, I think this book was trying to be two things that struggled to find synergy - a contemporary political drama and a mythic, magical, thematically rich dream. I believe the synergy could have been achieved if an editor had trimmed down some of the overly specific minutiae around social media and politics, making the book feel more universal.

Overall, this book was very imaginative and creative, and did spur some interesting conversations. It was worth the read. I’m grateful I received a copy to review.

WOW WOW WOW

If I could rate this higher, I would!!!

So on first seeing the 19+ hours I thought it would take me weeks to get through this audio however that was not the case I had listened to this in just 2 days because I simply couldn't put it down....

Firstly, the narration by Clare Corbett not entirely sure if I have encountered her before, but her voice was spectacular and en point for this book in particular. Every single character was brought to life and sounded so different that I could visualise each person with ease due to description and tones, pitch, and simply the delivery absolutely amazing. Also the cover is perfect catches the eye the most beautiful colour of teal, with crow front and centre sparks of gold which can be seen as cracks into our various timelines and / or our personal life journey where we allow healing to enter when we grieve the loss of a loved one.

For many this may seem very out there or fantasy when infact for me and my personal experiences this is in actual more factual alot closer to reality than fiction, not to say the characters and story itself isn't fiction however the underlying structure is so so very real!!!

I feel like I could write an essay so I will do my best to keep this short as possible I am in complete awe of this book, this has to be the best book I have read this year without a doubt and Ive read some very good books but this for me was not just fiction this is actually everything we are currently living through now. The author has managed to put into a novel the experiences of the spiritual world and higherself along with the current way of the world absolutely fantasticly I cannot express how well written this is there are simply no words but I will try.

From the beginning Lan (the grandmother of the family) is aware she is passing away she knows this going to be hard on her family particularly her grandson Finn so she trys to figure out a way to communicate before leaving this realm. While going through her life's journey she clearly has been a spiritual woman teaching her daughter and family the benefits of grounding, clearly has awareness of lucid dreaming, the wisdom of our ancestors, not to mention the warrior spirit to fight for what is right in the world for justice, for peace and unity most importantly for your family after all family is everything.

When Lan transitions from this realm she is acutely aware she can stay in the in-between where she can be with and communicate with her family, or go to the light cross over the bridge she makes her choice to stay she knows her purpose her family need her here.

Throughout this book Lan takes on different forms as each member of the family can sense her in different ways firstly her connection is with her daughter who is clearly older, longer physical connection, possibly little more open minded and aware definitely more ready to receive so Lan is able to enter her dreams and also then Maddie (Lans daughter) is able to feel her presence around her. For her grandson Finn he is the most difficult for Lan to make contact but eventually she does when she was alive they played warcraft together she sees this is their unique connection and so this is how to individually connect with him. The twins Niall and Kirsten both sense her in their own ways. Connor (grandfather) talks with ease in his dreams with Lan. As time goes on another child is born Kaitlyn, she has much spiritual power and is able to connect with Lan as Lan transforms into a crow Kaitlyn opens the window telepathicly communicating knowinf this is what she is to do allowong her into her room whilst this little crow taps away on her computer sending her a cohearant message.

There is a place called the void which is where you are able to see all the possibilities of what may happen best way to envisage this is like sliding doors if you make one decision things will turn out a certain way however this takes form in the spiritual the higher conciousness that enters this void and can be dangerous a place that Lan ventured to on a few occasions 1 with Kaitlyn in which I won't divulge the details. However the point of explaining this is for me the understanding is this expresses how we have varying timleines and the simple difference in 1 choice can litrally change the course of the world only you may not be aware of this so when you think you don't count in any way remember you do, we all are connected and interlinked and I think this book brings that message home. Everything has meaning, purpose, and consequences, all with free will.

The wisdom the Lan shares of anscestors is beautiful and for children to grow up aware that they will one day be those anscestors for future generations is someone who is raising a beautiful group of individuals in my view. Learning how to build sustainable farms, communities with love and unity is much more than many of us could ever dream of. However, this is the point that nothing is impossible. This book is so inspirational that you will feel it all to your core and understand what can be achieved with a great mindset and a good support network.

Regarding the other main plot of the book being the fact a 14 year girl uploads a tweet exposing exploitation of violent pornography after a personal tragedy prompts her to which leads to a whole story in itself including exposing corruption within high ranking policemen, high ranking house of commons in UK, MP's etc this goes so far the family need security from potential threats and constant media attention. All of which Lan is there to guide them through. This message shows bravery, courage and hope for future generations where 1 family all come together believing in justice and doing the right thing even though they are extremely aware they are dealing with top officials who at the drop of hat could have a detrimental impact on their lives, they do not stop. Why? Well, the cause is greater building communities that are not governed by corrupt violent pedophiles to begin with is of the utmost importance if this world is ever going to change. If not us, then who, if not now, then when? The youth of today are our future they have a voice and it counts and this family are standing together to ensure this message is heard loud and clear before the world is taken over and completely destroyed at the hands of those who go to Christmas government parties without a second thought to the unnecessary war, the everyday person struggling with cost of living, the person lying on the street from drug addiction, the person being violated by revenge porn whatever the case may be all of which are real current issues in our world today.

Lastly this book if not already obvious consists of grief, tragedy, corruption, crimes but the other perspective is more important is love, family, unity, courage, warrior spirit, belief, knowing, intelligence, understanding, growth, healing, forgiveness, and so so much more.

If I could make people read or listen to this book, I would because honestly, right now, it is absolutely pivotal and critical timing of its release in the times we are living in.
I will never ever forget this read.

Remember each and everyone of us have the opportunity to make a difference in this world no matter how big or small your voice counts, let's make it better for future generations, for the children of the future there is always hope. Also this book imo highlights the fact we do and can have connection with our loved ones when they pass so listen to the nudges of your soul never discredit your own gut instincts it signs, syncronicities and serendipity. From personal experiences, I know this to be true and simply.... I BELIEVE 🙏🏼❤️✨️

This book had an intriguing premise that drew me in — a deceased grandmother who can still guide and help her family from beyond the grave? Count me in! Unfortunately, I felt confused while reading it more than I would prefer to admit, and I struggled to connect with both the plot and characters. Perhaps it was a case of the book trying to be too many things at once (political / social statement? magical realism? dystopian? World of Warcraft fanfic?), which left me feeling like I was still standing on the platform while the plot train barreled on without me. I do think there was a lot of potential here that many other readers will enjoy immensely, I just missed that opportunity to connect with it.

The audiobook performance was done well, with plenty of emotion and heart delivered along with it. A big thank you to NetGalley, Bolinda Audio, and Manda Scott for giving me the opportunity to listen to an advance copy for honest review.

This is very different to my usual reads, but honestly I was hooked.
It explores so many concepts including life after death, the power of words, and influencing from beyond. It also navigates themes of suicide, grief, cyber hacking, media corruption, racism, extortion, harassment, and manipulating narratives.
It stems from Lan, a grandmother who passes away but makes a promise to her grandson to be there when he calls.
With spiritual guidance she is able to connect and influence, altering paths in her family's lives, but some paths are harder to change and have devastating repercussions and ripples on humanity.

This is a raw and layered journey that explores variants of time, consequences of decisions, and chain reactions that have cataclysmic effects. There are so many intriguing layers to this book, it's an entertaining and reflective journey, as well as a troubling glimpse into possible futures.
It creatively fuses spirituality, politics, corruption, real world issues, and brings the question of what if?
It is a poignant reminder and startling look into how free speech and courageous desires for change can be twisted by corporations, and manipulated into radicalism, terrorism and fear mongering. It is extremely thought provoking!

This is a really difficult book to rate and review. I think the best way to describe it is ambitious.

It starts with the death of Lan, our main character, and her passing on into the afterlife. She doesn't move on completely after promising to stay around to look after her family. But this isn't really a fantasy - I've seen it described as dystopian but I think it's too close to reality to call it that. Lan watches over her family across many years, sometimes attempting to nudge things along if she can.

The main story kicks off when her teenage granddaughter (born after her death) makes several posts on social media about pornography. This leads to all the media attacks and dissections you'd expect, but it also exposes the nastier habits of many of the people in charge. This all ends up with the family trying to make seismic changes to how the world is run, starting with a UK general election (what a time to be reading this), focussing on honesty, transparency, trying to shift towards sustainability etc.

It took me a long time to get into, and then I would waver between liking it and getting frustrated. I didn't feel connected to any of the characters, and a lot of the time they felt just like walking manifestos - somehow especially when they were all together - it just didn't feel like a natural way for families to talk to each other.

And whilst all their beliefs and targets are largely admirable and I'm sure are meant to be inspiring; I can't help feel like it gives the message that you need plenty of money (ethically sourced, obviously - not like those other people), connections, legal knowledge, the resources of a large online community, all of whom happen to be super ethical, and are willing to do miraculous hacking and coding in the blink of an eye, in order to bring about change. You probably do.

If you enjoy a lot of politics and activism and don't mind a healthy dose of fantasy/spiritualism, then I think you'll enjoy this. Although I didn't love it, I think it's a book that I will continue to think about.

This was an interesting look at the spiritual world, and connections to the living. The influence of those who've past may have when we still feel we need them the most.
Lan is doing her best even though she is no longer among the living to help keep her family safe but also assist in bettering the world. Her grandchildren are trying to make a positive change in their world, and those that are corrupte in power will do what ever they can to stop the movement, and stay in power. The power of shining a light on a dark truth, and sparking change... I have so many thoughts. A good book.

Wow, I felt like I just read like 5 books in one. There was so much going on, which was good, I was guessing what was going to happen next. Definitely not the usually genre I read, so that explains some of the rating. But, I’m glad to have the opportunity to expand my reading.

Note: I received a free Reviewer Copy in return for an honest review of the book.

3.5 ⭐️ Timeline traveling in the after life is such an interesting take and a story told from the POV of a character who is dead almost immediately is unique. Thought provoking and a hopeful take on what the future can be. This novel is heavily a political/social statement so know that going into it.

I’ve read and loved almost everything by Manda Scott and so wanted to love this too. Unfortunately, I really struggled with it. I knew it was probably Scott’s most personal and ambitious work and I was intrigued to read it, but I’m afraid I just struggled my way through it and in all honesty, I could have given up any time after 50 pages.
The premise of the story is that Lan – a dead grandmother – can guide and support her family from beyond the grave. I found so much of the book confusing both in terms of the characters and plot – I was as confused at the end as I was after 25 pages. It is essentially a dystopian fantasy/political/sci-fi with crows, salmon and lions as messengers.
Readers of fantasy and/or science fiction would probably get much more out of this than me.
Sorry – I wanted to like it.

★★★★

This book is truly unique, both in its premise of connecting with those who’ve passed on through our dreams and in its exploration of the technological, political, and generational challenges we currently face, ultimately offering hope for our shared future.

We meet Lan, a mother and grandmother, on her deathbed. Outside, a crow keeps watch, preparing her for what comes next. As she prepares to leave the world of the living, she is confronted with a promise she made to her youngest grandson, Finn. Instead of moving on and reuniting with her wife, who passed many years before, Lan chooses to remain in the in-between world, watching over her family.

When her granddaughter tweets a contradictory statement, the family finds itself at the center of an international scandal that quickly escalates on a global scale. They are forced to make a choice: admit fault where they see none or stand by their beliefs and challenge the establishment.

This story provides ample food for thought, addressing nearly all of today’s political challenges. It explores the victories and potential pitfalls of technology, while emphasizing the importance of bridging generational divides through open communication and a shared commitment to creating a better future for all.

Regardless of one’s political perspective, Manda Scott offers future scenarios so unsettling and dystopian that they demand reflection and action. Yet, the book also presents pathways to a brighter future, infused with much-needed tones of hope and optimism.

🎧 I listened to the audio version of the book, narrated by Clare Corbett, who did a fantastic job!

Thank you to Book Publicity Services and author Manda Scott for a copy. All opinions are my own.

✨Any Human Power by Manda Scott✨

Genre: Sci-Fi
Pages: 396

📚As Lan lies dying, she makes a promise that binds her long into the Beyond. A decade later her teenage granddaughter is caught up in an international storm of outrage that unleashes the rage of a whole, failed generation. For one shining fragment of time, the world is with her. But then the backlash begins, and soon she and her family are besieged by the press, facing the all-powerful wrath of the old establishment whose only understanding is power-over, not power-with.
Watching over the growing chaos is Lan, who taught them all to think independently, approach power sceptically and dream with clear intent. She knows that more than one generation’s hopes are on the line.

📝This was such a unique read! When I first started this book, I thought it would be about life & death with some fantastical elements woven into it. Boy was I wrong! I’d say after the first quarter of the book which I’d describe as fantasy, it evolves into more sci-fi/political.

This is such a multi-layered storyline with social commentary and perspective woven throughout. I have a particular fondness for books that are thought-provoking, ones that sit with you long after you’ve read them.

While this book wasn’t what I expected, I think it’s still worth the read! It’s a daring blend of magical realism, spiritualism, social uprising, and modern politics, all wrapped around a core story of family, legacy, and change. To say this book is ambitious would be underselling it—it takes on so much! It’s a book that offers layers of storytelling that feel both intimate and vast.

The story is told from the perspective of a deceased protagonist, Lan, who exists in an in-between space, watching over her family through generations. This perspective allows Scott to explore grief, political power, and sustainability—not just in the environmental sense, but also in sustaining family values and traditions in the face of loss.

While I didn’t find myself fully engrossed in every topic, the prose is undeniably lyrical, and there’s something beautiful in how the layers of the story unfold that will undoubtedly resonate with many readers. The book captures the urgency of the current moment, calling for change while reflecting on how the past and our ancestors can guide us toward a better future.

At a 19hr listen this read feels like absorbing multiple books at once. Its structure is layered and intricate, and while this can make the story feel overwhelming at times, it also adds to it. Nothing about the plot feels predictable, and the audiobook narration enhances the immersive quality of Scott’s writing, making it a standout experience.

If you’re drawn to books that push boundaries and blend genres, Any Human Power might just leave you on the edge of your seat! It wears many hats, falling into multiple categories while remaining uniquely itself. Fans of fantasy, sci-fi, and literary fiction will likely find themselves captivated by this story.

In 'Any Human Power' by Manda Scott, we meet an unlikely hero in the form of a crow. Lan is the mother and grandmother to a family who is tied together through unlikely bonds. Lan narrates a beautiful depiction of the afterlife, from the beyond, present, and in-between. While recently deceased, she traverses through time and space to intercept the dreams of her loved ones. This book encapsulates the risks taken, promises made, and the love of a family trumping all else.

While the first half of this book explores the vast multiverse of the living, dreamlands, and the in-between, the second half deals with a vow that Lan makes with her grandson, Finn. Lan's promise creates friction within the family, trapping her between worlds so she is not able to enter the peace and bliss of the afterlife. A dangerous tweet then sends the youngest grandchild into a tailspin, taking the family with her. There were parts of this book that became deeply political, which isn't usually something I'm interested in, but it ties in well to our world's relevant issues today.

Overall, this tale gets a 3/5 for the creative and fresh take on the afterlife, family bonds, and diving deep into the meaning of our words and the effect they have on a generation and future generations.

A provocative and powerful novel that starts with the death of the main character. She makes a promise to remain behind as a protective entity who can look out (guide) her family. I always love a hint of magic realism in novels.
I was positively impressed with the mention of video games (such as Warcraft), programming, and apps as a positive way to connect and communicate with younger generations... but thank you, author, for showing that being a gamer is not exclusive of a specific age. I truly appreciated reading this fiction having those events present when we are addressing a major theme like sex, consent, exposure of wrong doings (violence, racism, abuse, murder for the sake of misogynistic pleasure) making a difference (even when the ones figting are minors (They can still have a strong voice to reach those in power). Using the internet, social media is a positive tool to fight wrongdoings and exposure. Pointing out how toxic society can be in every level, figting back gaselighting, even how AI nowadays is in our lives as a feral activity, and feminism.

A metaphysical activist novel with characters with a lot of courage to voice concerns.

Any Human Power truly is an astonishing, bold, thought provoking read.

It's the first book by Manda Scott that I've read, but it certainly won't be the last. I'll be exploring her back catalogue very soon.

It's an intelligent, visionary eco-thrillwe that traverses many themes. It's spiritual, mystical and shamanic, it's intensely political and slightly dystopian. It discusses environmental concerns, digital warfare and the dangers of the Internet. It's about the afterlife and the possibilities of a better, brighter future for us all and it'll certainly have you staying up long after you should have gone to sleep turning the pages.

It's brave, it's beautiful, it's intense, absorbing and completely ground-breaking.

I read this in four sittings.

A huge 5 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from me.

Part political thriller, part dystopian fantasy. Intriguing plot, fab characters, much longer than I typically like but didn’t feel like a slog 🙌 Gorgeous narration in the audio too. Enjoyed switching between that and the physical. Unfortunately, as the book developed, it leant just more and more into sci-fi/fantasy than I personally enjoy. The story has heart and is oddly hopeful. Would fully recommend to SFF readers!

This book is an incredible work of creativity and inspiration. It tells the story of what could be; what might be; what needs to be. In a world dealing with broken politics and multiple environmental crises the author helps us imagine what an alternative future might look like. The plot is a vast and gripping journey into the future and as good as any thriller or science fiction book that I have ever read. It is also a beautiful love story, which inspires us to consider what it is to be human and how our connection and shared needs could enable us to collaborate in an alternative vision for humanity.

Part political thriller, part environmental manifesto for the future, part love story, this book will appeal to you if you wish to lose yourself in a huge work of creativity and dream of what we might be able to achieve in the coming decades.

Thank you, Book Publicity Services, for the opportunity to read this ARC!

This three-books-in-one story is extremely detailed and written in-depth. We go on a journey along Alanna Penhaligon, and get to meet her entire family and learn about her life. We come to terms with corruption in the world and the part(s) we can play in making the world a space we want to live in.

I think this is a great book! It's not necessarily an easy escape, per se, but it is an important premise and multi-layered in the way high fantasy readers love.

Thank you to the publishers, author and NetGalley for the free copy of this audio book.

This definitely had a very interesting premise but I just didn't connect to it like I thought I would. I thought it would for a minute when the big issue of the tweet happened but it just didn't really hit for me. Not a bad story overall and well written, I just didn't get sucked in. The narrator did a good job.

'Any Human Power' is a captivating blend of cultural, political thriller and spiritual meditation. The portrayal of crows as liminal beings resonated deeply with me, effectively traversing the physical world and other realms. What compelled me was the ease of integration of contemporary issues, such as the internet's cultural impact, with timeless spiritual themes. This juxtaposition is both urgently relevant and profound. Scott tackles the forces that threaten apocalypse, but she does so while maintaining a connection to the unseen (both ancient and modern) energies that shape our world. The result is a powerful exploration of human nature and our connectedness to each other and the planet.

I was instantly hooked. This is such an incredible, interesting, important and relevant book. I didn't really know what to expect going into it, I had just read the first paragraph of the description and instantly thought it sounded fascinating. You read from the perspective of Lan after she has died as she helps her family in different ways and in different shapes. The magic is there, but it is so real. Through the book Lan's descendants go through so much and are such warriors, and there are so much politics. But the politics is not my normal court politics, it is the British government, and the battles are not with swords but with words and about equality and about the environment.
It's a dystopia with so much hope, it makes you believe in the chance of a better world.

Any Human Power by Manda Scott is a gripping and absorbing novel that will resonate deeply with readers who crave stories of revolution, social justice, and the power of collective action, making it a perfect fit for fans of dystopian thrillers and those who are eager to be inspired by tales of courage, conviction, and the fight for a better world.
