How to lovingly release your creative blocks?

Do you wish your creativity would stop feeling stuck and would flow more?

As a child, I remember leaving the classroom cheeks flushed with shame after being asked to come for my regular session of ‘special help’ around reading, writing and spelling. It didn’t matter that I was an August baby, so 11 months younger than some of my peers, or that many years later discovered I was dyslexic, all that mattered to me at that moment was I felt different and that I was not enough.

When I was at university I managed to prove to myself that I wasn’t stupid by getting a 1st degree, but only got through repeating words spoken by academics in a parrot-like fashion. This reinforced a belief that what I had to say was only valuable when it was a repetition of someone else.

That is, until the great cosmic joke of starting to write a book last year. Or rather, a deep spiritual awakening that slowly nudged me down the path of writing one until I couldn’t resist any longer. Writing it has required me to stop hiding behind the safety of my silence, or other peoples words, and relearn how to let my creativity flow.

Maybe you’ve had a similar experience to me, or maybe a completely different one, either way, many of us have had experiences of not feeling enough, or feeling too much and so give away our voice and let someone else dictate the story of our lives. When we do this our creativity gets blocked. If we, our sisters or daughters, and even the world need anything right now, it’s for us to find creative ways to speak up and tell our truth.

My name is Faye, I’m new to the True Nature Team. For some of you reading this we will have met at one of the retreats, others I hope we get to know each other more soon. One of my new roles is to put together events or courses that serve the True Nature community.

For the first gathering I organise, I wanted to introduce you to one of the most fantastic human beings I know, my writing coach Rose Bohn.

I’ve been working with Rose since last June and she has helped me not only to transform my writing ability but to reclaim my voice and tell my story. She is both an English Professor and a trained Priestess, so elegantly straddles the worlds of head knowledge and heart knowledge.

This is us together last month before she left to return to America.

Maybe like me, you struggle with imposter syndrome in your creativity and start to think things like:

‘No cares what you have to say, so find something more useful to do.’

‘It’s too late to start, other people will always be better than me so why bother learning.’

‘I don’t even know where to begin…let me tidy my house / scroll on my phone / raid the fridge instead’ 😔 🥺 😳

Here’s a practice she has taught me to lovingly release creative blocks that I want to share with you…

Picture yourself sat on a park bench with large trees 🌳 all around and the melody of birdsong 🎵 in the air. Sitting next to you is the resistance you feel to your creative project. Imagine this is a person, animal or shape. What do they sound like? What colour or texture are they?

Next, put your arm around it and ask what it wants to tell you and why. Then ask the person, animal or shape, ‘What would support you most right now?’

It always surprises me what comes up when I do this and doing this has been a total game changer for me! Give it a go and get in touch with what comes up for you.
