Hi there,
Something shifted in the cultural conversation around psychedelics about seven years ago. You might remember it - suddenly people were talking about psilocybin, your dad had heard something on the radio, and the word "psychedelic" was appearing in the same sentence as Johns Hopkins and the NHS rather than Woodstock and Timothy Leary.
A lot of that shift can be traced back to one book.
How to Change Your Mind: The New Science of Psychedelics became a #1 New York Times bestseller in 2018. Michael Pollan had built his reputation as a food and social science writer and arrived at psychedelics with no agenda or prior experience, just a gifted journalist following the evidence and sharing his explorations. The founder of MAPS described him as "helping replace fear with hope," psychedelic researchers began quietly dividing history into "pre-Pollan" and "post-Pollan" - a time when it was genuinely hard to get funding or approvals, and a time when all of that changed.
Since then, he's kept going deeper. His new book, A World Appears: A Journey into Consciousness, moves beyond psychedelics into the fundamental mystery that underlies all of this work - how does experience arise at all? What does it mean that any of us have an inner life? It's exactly the kind of question we love sitting with together.
Which is why we are so excited to tell you that next Tuesday, 14th April, Michael Pollan is joining us live for a conversation and Q&A. An hour, online, open to everyone wherever you are in the world - your questions welcome. Tickets from £13.
