Hi there,

Garab Dorje was one of the first teachers of Buddhism in Tibet during the 7th century. A legendary figure, he is considered the founder of a school known as 'The Great Perfection,’ or  ‘Dzogchen’. He emphasised direct immersion into awareness, and that pure awake awareness is the original Buddha, the Ultimate Reality, beyond birth and cessation.

On his death, he encapsulated the whole path into three simple statements, now considered a universal introduction to Dzogchen.

In this short clip, Shamil Chandaria describes the 3 instructions in modern terms, and how once awareness is recognised, its power and peace can spread into more areas and moments of our lives.

From Sin to Symbiosis 

In many traditions, human flourishing is at odds with the deep spiritual insight.

Relationships and riches, the body and even the intellect are at best distractions, and at worst, the source of sin. 

A quality I admire in Shamil is that for him, there is ultimately no tension. Awakening and human flourishing support one another. With awakening comes the flexibility to change harmful patterns, and more beautifully express the universe. With more joy comes the peace to more directly recognise awareness.  

“When we can soften those sticky resonant patterns that want to dominate, we can allow energies to express, and we can resonate beautifully with the universe. Our hearts can resonate, our bodies can resonate, our minds can resonate, and we can play beautiful music and be a shining, resonant flower, vibrating in sympathy and harmony with the whole.” 

This doesn't have to mean sinking into a passive state of pure receptivity. Awareness has qualities of deep peace, but also of passion. Of creativity and also compassion. 

“We want to be the master of our music, the master of our energies, manifesting beautifully, sparklingly, appropriately to the circumstances. This is human flourishing. Grooving with the universe. Allowing the universe to shine more beautifully.
