"One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious." - Carl Jung
Hi there,
Not dim light. Not a sleep mask. Complete darkness - the kind where you genuinely cannot see your hand in front of your face.
It sounds extreme. But researchers have known for decades that sustained darkness triggers measurable shifts in brain chemistry. Melatonin production surges. The pineal gland - long associated in spiritual traditions with expanded perception - becomes dramatically more active.
Many cultures throughout history have used darkness as a deliberate practice - from Tibetan monks undertaking dark retreats lasting weeks, to the vision caves of Indigenous American traditions, to the "incubation" temples of ancient Greece where seekers slept in pitch black awaiting dreams and healing.
The premise is deceptively simple: most of us have sensory capacities that never fully develop because they're constantly drowned out. Sight is so dominant it essentially runs your brain. Remove it - not for an hour, but for long enough that your nervous system genuinely reorganises - and something else begins to come online.
We're offering a rare chance to find out what that something is for you at an intimate darkness retreat next month near Shaftesbury - approximately 65 hours of unbroken darkness, guided with breathwork, Qi Gong, group ceremony, and practices drawn from the facilitator's shamanic training.
No psychedelics. Just you, the dark, and whatever you find there.
