Hi there,
What if the way out of our most bitter political argument isn't a better argument at all - but a field, a pair of wellington boots, and ten minutes of silence?
That's roughly where Alexander Beiner lands in his piece, Listen to the Land. His wager is that the immigration debate is stuck because we keep fighting over abstractions - Britishness, identity, who belongs where - when we could be anchoring the conversation in the one thing that predates all of it: the land itself. It's a rich read on how geography quietly shapes culture, why "who belongs here?" might be the wrong question, and what changes when you ask a different one.
He'll be taking those questions off the page and into the room on Tuesday 4th August, in conversation with the mighty Josh Schrei - host of The Emerald Podcast and one of the most compelling voices anywhere on myth, animism and re-enchanting our relationship with the living world. If you've heard The Emerald, you'll know Josh doesn't so much discuss a topic as summon it: weaving folklore, poetry and deep history into something closer to an incantation than a talk.
Together they'll go after some of the thorniest questions in politics today - Who belongs to what land? What is the nature of belonging in a multicultural world? What does it mean to reconnect to the land, and to respect both movement and diversity?
It's at Number 90 in Hackney Wick, London, with a private space for drinks and unpacking it all afterwards. Members get a discount, as ever. Grab a ticket here →
