Hi there,
Had enough of the woo-woo hippies and ready for some hard science? (Only teasing, my incense-burning friends.) Then this one's for you.
For most of the last century, neuroscience could only watch the brain do ordinary things. Psychedelics changed the assignment. Put someone under a dose of psilocybin or DMT inside a scanner and you can watch ordinary consciousness come apart in real time: the borders between the senses blur, and networks that barely speak to one another begin firing in sync.
Out of experiments like these has come some of the boldest theory in modern brain science. The "entropic brain" reframes a trip as the mind turned up to a higher state of disorder (more on that from Robin Carhartt-Harris next month). Its cousin, the REBUS model, proposes that psychedelics relax the thick filter of expectation the brain lays over everything it perceives, letting it go off-script. That off-script state may be exactly why these compounds show such promise against depression, anxiety and addictions that shrug off standard treatment.
Few people can guide you through this territory like Dr Chris Timmermann. He ran the world's first brain-imaging studies of DMT at Imperial College London, has published more than 70 papers, and now co-directs UCL's Centre for Consciousness Research.
Across 10 weeks this autumn, his live online course travels from shamanic traditions to fMRI scanners and back: how these compounds reshape the brain and what they reveal about the self, without flinching from the risks. It's pitched for the neuro-curious as much as the seasoned, with session recordings, a certificate, and two socials to meet the rest of the cohort.
Early-bird tickets (£395) close tomorrow. Members save more, and you can stack a further 10% with the code UNLOCK10.

Longing for more meaningful connection?
Dr Rosalind Watts spent years exploring why connection to ourselves, each other, and the natural world feels so nourishing, why it is so essential to our wellbeing, and why it can be so difficult to maintain in modern life.
ACER is our way of bringing connection back. It's a year-long online container built on real community; a space to speak honestly, be witnessed, and not carry things alone. Whether you're processing a psychedelic experience or simply want more community in your life, ACER offers structure, belonging, live expert talks, Q&As, creative practices, and a rich resource library available anytime.
If you're craving that kind of connection, apply to join ACER today. We start October 1st.
