An evening of poetry and myth with Josh Schrei and Tom Hirons
In an age of cascading grandiosity, Empire demands ever greater Largeness.
Bigger, better, faster, more...
Higher definition, faster processing, more extravagant feats of conquest.
Even the horrors must be greater, crueller, more transgressive than ever in order to attract our attention.
What place, then, for the small powers?
Not the grandstand highlights reel, but the barely-noticed and the everyday, seemingly inconsequential ways in which we interact with the world and one another. Are they irrelevant in the face of the Large powers at work in the world, or are they - as Josh Schrei and Tom Hirons will assert - actually gateways through which we can outmanoeuvre, undermine and subvert the teetering edifices of the meta-crisis.
Not as an ‘everything will be fine if we can sit and drink tea with one another’ sticking plaster or as a reframing in order to tell ourselves that we matter more than we do, or might, but as a reminder that what Empire convinces us is unassailable might actually be a victim of its own inflated sense of the value of the Large. Small might not only be beautiful, but also powerful, vital and effective in our resistance against horrors in a time of Collapse.
Agree or disagree, come and join Josh and Tom for dialogue and mutual conversation, poetry, and exploration of what story and myth might have to offer us on this and other themes. Not because they’re two word-wizards with spells to cast over you -- or break -- but because in coming together, we can help one another remember what is good, what is powerful and what is necessary.

Thank you for an evocative evening of creative exploration. I didn’t know what to expect and came with the hope to get some inspiration as I’ve been feeling a bit stuck in my creative practice, plus the theme really spoke to me. The space was held really sensitively with a good structure that allowed for writing exercises as well as sharing. It was impressive how much was covered in just two hours and I also appreciated that you kept clear time boundaries which really helped to create a strong creative container. I left feeling nourished and inspired, thank you 🙏🏽 ✨
