Imbolc is a traditional Celtic festival celebrated around the beginning of February, marking the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. It's one of the four major Gaelic seasonal festivals, alongside Beltane, Lughnasadh, and Samhain. Imbolc is associated with the coming of spring and renewal of the earth.
The festival has ancient roots, originally tied to the goddess Brigid in Celtic mythology, who is connected to fire, fertility, healing, poetry, and smithcraft.
Celebrating Imbolc often includes:
- Lighting Candles or Fires: Symbolizing the increasing light of the sun as the days grow longer, it represents purification and the return of warmth.
- Spring Cleaning and Preparations: A time to cleanse both physical and spiritual spaces, prepare for new growth, and set intentions for the year ahead.
- Feasts and Offerings: Foods tied to dairy, such as milk, butter, and cheese, are often featured, as it aligns with the themes of fertility and renewal. Imbolc honours the first milking of the sheep after the winter which is why dairy products are so important at this time of year.
- Creating Brigid's Crosses or Dolls: These are symbolic of protection and healing and are sometimes woven from rushes or straw as offerings to the goddess.
In modern pagan and Wiccan practices, Imbolc marks the first stirrings of life after winter, invoking themes of purification, new beginnings, and the return of vitality.
Around the fire, our circle will begin with the calling of the directions and a meditation, followed by sharing. We will end with a song, or two (if we have time). We will then go to the waters edge to do a water blessing before getting ready to Sauna. Whilst in the Sauna we will do some intention setting and invocation as feels right.
