You've probably heard the phrase holding space - but what does it actually mean to do that well, especially when someone is in an altered state of consciousness?
At its core, psychedelic facilitation is about being a stable, ethically grounded presence for someone navigating a psychedelic experience - not steering them toward particular insights, but offering genuine containment so they can go where they need to go.
Research consistently shows that "set and setting" are the primary drivers of psychedelic outcomes. The practitioner is a living part of that setting. Which raises a question the field doesn't ask enough: what happens when the person holding space isn't actually ready to?
Unprepared facilitation can cause harm: unexamined saviour dynamics and blurred boundaries.
Many practitioners also hold others through profound experiences with no real structure of support for themselves and can fall into emotional burnout. So, who holds space for the spaceholders?
We're bringing two offerings this spring that take these questions seriously:
Psychedelic Facilitation is a 2-hour online workshop on what space holding actually demands: shadow, power dynamics, energetic hygiene, and the loneliness of the role.
If you're ready to go deeper, Holding Space: an 8-Week online course offers intimate, experiential learning in a group capped at 10 - developing not just your capacity to hold others, but your capacity to be held yourself.
