Hi there,
Most psychedelic research still asks what these substances can do as medicines. Oregon is asking a different question: what happens when adults are allowed to access psychedelics legally for wellbeing, personal exploration and growth?
More than 20,000 people have now used Oregon’s legal psilocybin programme, created after voters passed it in 2020. Most adults over 21 can attend a licensed service centre and take psilocybin with a trained facilitator, without a diagnosis, prescription or referral. It is a public wellness and facilitation model - and the first major real-world study of it came out last week. It found improvements in depression, anxiety, PTSD symptoms, wellbeing and life satisfaction, with relatively few serious adverse reactions.
That feels especially relevant to what we are trying to explore at the Psychedelic Society. We believe the promise of psychedelics extends beyond individual healing or self-improvement: these experiences can change how we relate to one another, to our communities and to the living world around us. The challenge is what happens afterwards - whether insight remains private, or becomes part of how we build relationships, communities and cultures that are more connected, compassionate and alive.
Oregon is an important experiment not simply in widening access to psilocybin, but in asking what kind of social infrastructure we might build around profound experience. And with that in mind, here are some of the spaces we’re creating in the weeks ahead to explore these questions together, in community.

Longing for more meaningful connection?
Dr Rosalind Watts spent years exploring why connection to ourselves, each other, and the natural world feels so nourishing, why it is so essential to our wellbeing, and why it can be so difficult to maintain in modern life.
ACER is our way of bringing connection back. It's a year-long online container built on real community; a space to speak honestly, be witnessed, and not carry things alone. Whether you're processing a psychedelic experience or simply want more community in your life, ACER offers structure, belonging, live expert talks, Q&As, creative practices, and a rich resource library available anytime.
