In this participatory evening, psychotherapist Sebastien Black will demystify Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR). He’ll explore what it is, how it works, and what the latest applied neuroscience and trauma research shows about why it’s so effective.
By looking at the polyvagal system, Sebastien will explain how we can ‘psycho-hack’ our way out of overwhelm, by working with the nervous system rather than against it. He will also bring attention to other trauma-based therapies, such as Internal Family Systems (IFS) and somatic resetting, and look at new theories around complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) and its overlap with neurodiversity.
This event will provide you with practical, trauma-informed grounding tools and techniques to regulate the nervous system. The information will be delivered in a metamodern style: blending levity, sensitivity, personal anecdotes, and the consolations of psychology.
This will be an experiential space where people feel held, learn together, and leave with real skills for their day-to-day lives.

Sebastien Black (he/him) is an NCPS-accredited psychotherapist, trauma specialist, and founder of Soft Focus Therapy. With a background in psychology, EMDR, and somatic practices, his work explores how deep-rooted patterns can shift when we learn to work with the nervous system rather than against it. His approach draws from polyvagal theory, Internal Family Systems (parts work), and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, creating a safe, grounded space for processing stuck states, attachment wounding, and overwhelm.
Sebastien’s style blends applied neuroscience, personal insight, and a metamodern sensibility, holding both humour and depth. He has delivered talks and workshops on everything from laughter yoga to trauma-informed grounding, and is currently writing a book exploring emotional stuckness and the body. His practice is queer-affirming, neurodiversity-informed, and deeply relational, with the core belief that healing begins wherever you are.
