Welcome to the beautiful path of unlocking your inner artist.
If you haven't heard of the Artist Way before, or if you have and are curious about it, or even if you've done it before and want to experience it once more, you are on the right place. The Artist's Way is a self-taught course that you embark for 12-weeks in order to unlock your creativity and bring your inner artist out of the shadows into the light of self-expression. The added element is that you will be doing it in a group setting, where the process will be easier for you as you will be held and supported within a container of individuals that are going through the same process, including the facilitator. As a facilitator, my role will be to offer guidance throughout the process and to hold space for the group. The journey can be quite intense for all of us, so it is important to be in the right head space and make sure you have the time and space to rest, self-reflect and follow the course guidelines, do the exercises and attend to the group sessions, which will take place once a week, online.
We're all artists, without exception. Every single one of us has the potential to express creatively; even when we've been told that we're not, that what we were doing in childhood was wrong, naughty, dirty or financially unsustainable. Sounds familiar? You're not alone. That's why Julia Cameron created this course, so you could desmantle all the conditionments and blockages that were built upon you on your early childhood against your creative expression. Thanks to this course, you will find more of yourself, find your creative voice, recognise your blockages and start the path towards the creative being that you are meant to be. This is a journey of recovery, similar to the 12-steps programme created for people recovering from addictions. We are recovering from the addiction to live in a victimhood and powerless state and recovering a sense of self, of trust, of compassion, of strenght, of self-belief.
As we will be doing very deep healing work, clearing all the childhood wounds that created these blockages, we need to give ourselves the compassion, rest and tenderness we need in order to process all the wounding we will be looking at. This course is not for the faint hearted. It definitely requires being ready to embark this deep journey of self-reflection and being committed to the healing we'll embark. If you're not already soing so, I would recommend that you also receive therapy from a trained professional, as it will aid your healing process. Nonetheless, the group will be there to support your journey and I am always available for a chat or a call if you need more 1-1 guidance.
Does it sound like you're ready? Good, I would love it if you join me on this journey.
How the course is structured:
- Weekly readings: every week, you need to read the information set for that week so you can process what needs to be processed during the week. Each chapter comes with a set of exercises as well as the theory section. The exercises are a key part of the journey as they are the ones that help us to release the blockages and get to know more of ourselves. It is very important that you do them and try your best not to skip any of them.
- Morning pages: an essential tool for this course, and one that you will appreciate having even when the course is finished, is a journalling- free writing practice that you will do every morning. You will need a note pad for this, so you can write 3 whole pages every morning, as soon as you wake up (and have been to the toilet of course) where you will free-write about anything that crosses your mind. It doesn't have to be about any specific topic or happening in your life. This is your free space to complain, cry, acknowledge or imagine anything you want to manifest in your life. This practice is life-changing and very beneficial for your mental health as it is a type of meditative practice where you can empty your mind of repetitive thoughts, worries or desires. Leave it to the page, the rest will take care of itself.
- Artist Dates: once a week, you are ought to invite yourself on a date. Yes, a date. The same type of date you will go to with a lover or a friend. It is a time that you deserve to give yourself and you need to make space in your calendar for that. Some students ask me "is it ok if I schedule in just one hour, before I am due to meet another friend?" And I say, "yes, but... imagine if you're due to go on a date with someone. Will you offer them just one hour? Or would you like good quality time so you can get to know each other more? The same principle works for you. Don't rush the date with yourself! It's ok if you only have one hour for yourself on your busy schedule, but perhaps consider practicing expanding that time, little by little each week, simply because you deserve it!" I know, it can be awkward sometimes to spend that much time with yourself, but that's the whole purpose of the Artist's Date; to make it as much creative and fun as possible so you enjoy the time with yourself and it's not another chore you have set yourself to do for the week.
- Weekly group meetings: we will meet online every Monday from 6-8.30pm to discuss the exercises of the week, the artist's dates, the morning pages practice and any challenges or insights that we've found significant for our recovery. These sessions are really important and you will only be accepted onto this course if you can attend the online sessions. Otherwise, you can do the course by yourself and in your own pace. It will be equally effective. The only difference will be that you won't have the support of the group. For some people this makes a lot of difference as they find the support of the group helps them to keep moving forward. It is easier for some people to hold themselves accountable when they are journeying with more people.
How much does it cost?
I am asking for a non-refundable deposit of 60£ to secure your place and once you have secured your place, the rest of the investment can be paid one week before the course starts, which is another 60£. You can also pay it all in one go if that is easier for you.
There are concessions available. Please email me if you need solidarity price to be part of this group.
Refund policy:
If things have changed before the course starts and you cannot longer be part of it, I will only refund 50% of your deposit if you cancel within 2 weeks prior to starting the course. After that time, the refund won't be applicable to cover administrative time and effort that I am putting on creating this container. This time frame is necessary so I can have time to find other people that can join the course last minute.
Materials needed:
- 2 notepads: one for the morning pages and one to do the exercises
- Magazines, scizors and glue for collage
- Colour pencils, markers, watercolour or paints if you wish to use them to draw or paint as suggested on some of the exercises.
- The Artist's Way book
- Access to internet via laptop or phone to do the weekly online sessions.
This is not a religious course.
Julia Cameron mentions God or the Divine Creator as the source of our creativity. We are simply vessels for the Creator to pour through. Even though she mentions God as a source of creativity, this doesn't make it a religious book. You don't need to believe in God in order to do this course. There is not a specific religious belief attached to the idea of God. You don't need to call it God if you don't want to. You can call it Creatigve Source if you wish. The idea is that you allow yourself to connect with your inner guidance and let your creativity express through you.
