Discover how uniting science and spirituality can guide us toward a more connected, awakened way of being.
In an increasingly disconnected world —from nature, from each other, and from our own inner depths—James Cooke’s groundbreaking new book, The Dawn of Mind: How Matter Became Conscious and Alive, offers a profound and urgent perspective on the role of consciousness in existence. With scientific precision and spiritual insight, Cooke challenges the reality of self, separation, and solid substance, proposing instead that consciousness is a fundamental aspect of life itself. As living beings, we are not isolated observers - it is through us that the universe wakes up to know itself.
“It is through us that the universe wakes up to know itself”
This vision has deep personal and planetary relevance. As we navigate escalating ecological and societal crises, James argues that our current polycrisis stems from a fundamental rupture in our relationship with the natural world. Healing this divide requires integrating rigorous scientific inquiry with the wisdom of spiritual traditions—an approach that recognizes consciousness as an intrinsic aspect of life. This perspective also informs our understanding of artificial intelligence: AI will never be truly conscious, but artificial life would be.
Join James Cooke and Shamil Chandaria in conversation as they launch The Dawn of Mind, exploring the intersections of neuroscience, meditation, psychedelics, and the philosophy of mind. Discover how science and spirituality, when united, can illuminate our deepest questions about existence—and guide us toward a more connected, awakened way of being.

About James Cooke

James Cooke trained as a neuroscientist after a profound awakening as a teenager that showed him the reality of spiritual states of consciousness. He has three degrees in experimental psychology and neuroscience from Oxford University, including a PhD in neuroscience. He has conducted research into the brain basis of consciousness at such institutions as Oxford University; the University of California, Berkeley; University College London; Trinity College Dublin; and Riken Brain Sciences Institute in Tokyo. At the University of London, he achieved the theoretical breakthrough that forms the basis of his new book, The Dawn of Mind, first publishing his findings in the prestigious Journal of Consciousness Studies and later in Entropy. Outside of academia, he directs the Inner Space Institute, a platform for promoting understanding around science and spirituality.

Mark on Headless Way: A day with Richard Lang in London | 3 days ago
Another fantastic day hosted by Richard. It’s hard to describe the sheer joy of attending these workshops. I almost leave with a sense of awe, that’s hard to describe. Something shifts within me and I’m left with a gift that has no ending. It’s so wonderful to be in the company of others with this sense of curiosity. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful ambassador of this gift such as Richard, who has dedicated his life to the discoveries of Douglas Harding. Whatever your spiritual background or non spiritual background this can only enhance the journey of life. I cannot recommend this enough. Huge thanks to Richard 🙏

Richard is fantastic and the headless way is a brilliant method to seeing who we really are. If a guru type figure was ever supposed to epitomise the freedom and happiness that we all want it is Richard. Non-stop laughs throughout the day and plenty of experiments. Would definitely recommend.

Natalia Szewczyk on Freedom Beyond Thought: Nondual Meditation & Inquiry with James Cooke | 14 days ago
This was a highly practical workshop where we performed 4 meditations exploring the awareness of "self" and our consciousness. James mentioned a couple of meditation techniques/tools that I started using since the workshop. His knowledge is just incredible and he is a very considerate facilitator. I really enjoyed the workshop and would definitely attend again.

Hannah Moss on Ways of Looking: A 6-week Meditation Course | 17 days ago
Such a great course! Mark is an expert facilitator who holds the space so well – with passion, kindness and thoughtful insight. I found the material and sessions very well structured, with plenty of time for teachings, practice and discussion. A great introduction to Rob Burbea's teachings covering lots of material but without being overwhelming. It's definitely inspired me to dive deeper! Thank you 🙏

Thank you very much Richard, Faye and all the team at Brimpt Farm! The retreat was so much fun, deeply fulfilling, meeting so many wonderful people and sharing in their Headlessness! I highly recommend this retreat, and the Headless Way, for anyone who wants to realise their true nature, smile, laugh, and make loving connections.
Any thoughts on the food? Amazing vegan and vegetarian food served three times a day. I normally don't eat breakfast but it was so delicious I couldn't help myself! |
