Life, Mind & Psychedelic Insight with Dr James Cooke

Psychedelic experiences are capable of revealing previously hidden truths, about our minds and about the world. 

Which of these insights can we trust?  

The living mirror theory of consciousness offers a scientific lens through which we can understand the validity of certain psychedelic insights.  This theory holds that consciousness is a property of the life process, it comes into existence through our attempted separation with the rest of reality.  From this perspective, we see that the mind is fundamentally undivided and so is the world outside of us.  

We see that we see that the psychological self is an illusion, we find that we are truly part of the natural world and discover that there is really only one consciousness in existence.  What’s more, we see that, as many psychonauts have suspected throughout the ages, the brain does not generate consciousness.  

This approach caches out these claims not in a way that goes against science, but in a way that is in complete alignment with contemporary neuroscientific, psychological and biological science.  It shows that it is possible to weave together subjective psychedelic insight and objective scientific investigation into a unified understanding of the nature of consciousness and reality.

Dr James Cooke is a neuroscientist, writer & speaker, focusing on consciousness, meditation, psychedelic states, science and spirituality.  He completed his MSc and PhD in Neuroscience at Oxford University, and now has research positions at University College London and Trinity College Dublin where he investigates how our perceptual systems structure the continuous sensory input our brain receives into a conscious experience of separate perceptual objects.  James is passionate about exploring the relationship between science and spirituality, which he does via his writing (frequently for http://RealitySandwich.com), YouTube channel (http://YouTube.com/DrJamesCooke) and podcast (Living Mirrors with Dr. James Cooke).
