The Global Underscore in Devon

On the 21st June we will be holding our very own local Global Underscore at the Moor Imagination Collective in Buckfastleigh. 

The Underscore is a kind of dance map—fluid, spacious, quietly wild. It was shaped over many years by Nancy Stark Smith, one of the originators of Contact Improvisation. It invites us into a shared field of attention, where we move alone and together, through stillness, sensation, curiosity, and sometimes exuberance.

The structure supports a wide range of experience—from subtle, internal landscapes to high-energy group dances. It's both carefully composed and completely alive, different every time.

Each year near the summer solstice, dancers all over the world tune into the Global Underscore—a 4-hour shared practice, spiralling through time zones and bodies, a wave of movement circling the earth.

We’ll begin with a 45-minute introduction led by Klara, offering a gentle dive into the language, symbols, and phases of the Underscore. This “Talk-Through” helps us land together, whether you’re new to the practice or returning with fresh eyes.
