For millennia, mushrooms have been recognised by many cultures across the world for their medicinal properties - from deep in the tropics to the high reaches of the Arctic circle. Now more than ever our immune systems are in need of support from the presence of damaging pollutants and pathogens that now pervade our environments and threaten our health.
In this special IMMUNITY edition of Mushroom Medicine, you will dive deep with David Satori into the natural history and pharmacology of several top medicinal mushroom species, learning the best ways to make mushrooms part of your daily health practices. Our exploration will cover (but won’t be limited to) turkey tail, reishi, cordyceps, and birch polypore, just to name a few.
Recently, a renewed interest in natural, sustainable ways of keeping our bodies healthy has blossomed across society, and the importance of robust immune health has never been as pertinent in recent history as it is now. Thankfully, the findings of modern science and ancient traditions converge on medicinal mushrooms, which have shown marvellous potential in helping us build strong immune systems.
Sustainability and conservation are amongst the top core values here at Myceliate, so our exploration will be infused with discussions of how to harvest responsibly from the wild, and how to seek out the most eco-conscientious mushroom cultivators around you.
“David combines a keen enthusiasm for fungi with an excellent knowledge of life sciences, which he is able to communicate with great clarity. His presentation was engaging and full of practical tips on how to make the best use of these treasures of nature. Whether you are a lifelong mushroom enthusiast or just have a casual interest in fungi, I'm pretty sure you will find David's work engaging and fascinating. But beware: his enthusiasm for mushrooms is highly contagious!” Marco C.
David Satori is a mycologist, teacher, science communicator, and an avid enthusiast of plants and fungi. He’s studying for a master’s degree in Plant and Fungal Taxonomy, Diversity, and Conservation from the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew and Queen Mary University of London, where he’s researching how wild relatives of crop plants can be used to adapt our food systems in the face of a changing climate.
In 2018, he launched Myceliate, a fungal conservation initiative dedicated to creating solutions for protecting endangered species of fungi in the UK, whilst teaching people about the importance of fungi in our ecosystems, our health and wellbeing, and the need for ecological restoration. He strongly believes that developing a knowledge of the names and uses of wild plants and fungi will lead to a more regenerative and ecologically aware society.
