Part of the online event series With Reality in Mind, join us for a landmark dialogue between two profound contemporary thinkers delving ever deeper into the relationship between consciousness and reality.
Swami Sarvapriyananda is head minister of the Vedanta Society of New York and a renowned interpreter of Advaita Vedanta. He has many online talks available that translate the ancient non-dual approach of ancient India in language that is easy to understand and can lead to profound shifts in experience.
Bernardo Kastrup is probably the most well-known modern proponent of metaphysical idealism - the notion that the fundamental nature of reality in consciousness. Drawing on foundational physics, neuroscience and analytic philosophy, he has reached conclusions remarkably similar to the views celebrated by ancient mystical traditions.
This conversation promises to deepen the exchanges they enjoyed in previous dialogues, while venturing into new territory, comparing the ancient wisdom of Vedantic philosophy with modern analytical approaches to consciousness.
- What insights emerge when these complementary approaches meet?
- How do Vedantic concepts of consciousness align with or differ from analytical idealism?
- Can ancient and modern frameworks for understanding mind and reality enrich each other?
Join us for what promises to be a rich exploration of these profound questions, guided by two clear and compelling voices in the contemporary dialogue about consciousness.

About Swami Sarvapriyananda

Swami Sarvapriyananda is a widely respected monk of the Ramakrishna Order, currently serving as head minister of the Vedanta Society of New York. A dynamic teacher renowned for his ability to convey complex Vedantic principles with remarkable clarity, he regularly attracts global audiences through his lectures and online presence. His background combines deep scholarship in traditional Vedantic texts - particularly his illuminating talks on the Mandukya Upanishad and Drig Drishya Viveka - with an engagement with contemporary philosophy and science.
Before joining the Vedanta Society of New York, he served as assistant minister of the Vedanta Society of Southern California and prior to that as Principal of the Probationers' Training Center at Belur Math. He holds a degree in Business Management from Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, and his talks seamlessly weave insights from modern fields like neuroscience and quantum physics with traditional Vedantic teachings.

Bernardo Kastrup's work has been leading the modern renaissance of the philosophical position, ‘metaphysical idealism’ that reality is essentially mental, an appearance in ‘mind.’ Bernardo has a Ph.D. in philosophy (ontology, philosophy of mind) and another Ph.D. in computer engineering (reconfigurable computing, artificial intelligence). As a scientist, Bernardo has worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Philips Research Laboratories (where the 'Casimir Effect' of Quantum Field Theory was discovered). Formulated in detail in many academic papers and books, his ideas have been featured on Scientific American, the Institute of Art and Ideas, the Blog of the American Philosophical Association and Big Think, among others. Amir runs Adventures in Awareness to foster connections between meditators, scientists and philosophers to generate new insights that can benefit ordinary people. Through discussion, events and courses he hosts explorations in what it means to be a ‘modern mystic’ - balancing the challenges and gifts of modern life whilst alive to timeless mystery.
He worked for 20 years as a choreographer, performer and dancer on everything from MARVEL movies to Royal Opera House productions, specialising in contemporary dance, contact improvisation and Argentine tango.
He remains interested into how insight can transform how we move, relate and live.
