Lammas, also known as Lughnasadh (pronounced Loo-nah-sah), is one of the eight festivals (Sabbats) of the Wheel of the Year, traditionally celebrated on August 1st. The word Lammas comes from the Old English hlāfmæsse, meaning "loaf mass," and marks the first harvest of grain, especially wheat. It was a time when communities would bake bread from the first grain and offer it in gratitude—a sacred act of giving thanks for sustenance. This festival honoured the life-giving power of the land and the reciprocal relationship between people and the Earth. In Christianised Europe, Lammas remained as a seasonal celebration tied to agricultural rhythms, often marked with blessings of fields and feasting on fresh produce.
Lughnasadh is a sabbat stemming from deeper Celtic roots and is named after the god Lugh, the skilled warrior and sun deity from Irish mythology. This legend tells us that, Lugh established the festival in honour of his foster mother Tailtiu, who died from exhaustion after clearing the land for agriculture. Early Lughnasadh gatherings were celebrated by holding great tribal fairs, games, horse races, handfastings, and ritual offerings to aid a bountiful harvest. It was both a celebration and a solemn reminder of the sacrifice and labour that sustains life.
Though many of these customs have faded with time, modern pagans, witches, and nature-based spiritual seekers have revived Lughnasadh as a moment to pause, give thanks and be grateful, and nurture an awareness of what is yet to come in both the outer and inner worlds.
- For our Wheel of the Year celebration of Lammas/Lugnasadh we will sauna shortly after we arrive from 15:00 - 16:00. The sauna will involve singing songs, chanting, swimming and doing some harvest appreciation.
- After we finish in the Sauna we will gather round the fire for our Circle from 16:30 - 18:00. We will eat Beetroot Muffins and drink Herbal Tea crafted for the Season/Sabbat.
- We will end with a harvest ritual giving thanks for all the earth provides
