Hi, I’m Modern Biology and welcome to my Field Trip!
This spring, I’m doing a series of intimate pop-up plant and mushroom music shows in public parks. These events will combine foraging, park cleanup, and a live deep listening experience. We’ll be using proceeds from each show to support local environmental charities. This event will be in a public park in Bristol. The exact location will be revealed the day before the event.
Here’s what to expect at this 2 hour experience:
On arrival you’ll be given a set of wireless headphones. You’ll be asked for a piece of ID that will be returned to you on return of the headphones at the end of the event.
To help shift your state of being, wherever you may be coming from on that day, I’ll be creating ambient, dreamy soundscapes made with the bioelectricity of the flora and fungi we find in the park! This is literally my favourite thing to do, and I can’t wait to share it with you.
Please note that I want to create a space for you to drop into the sights, sounds, and smells around you during the listening period of this experience. I recommend saving conversations, questions, and curiosities for the end of the show where I will have dedicated time for talking more about the music, getting interactive, and more!
Time: 2 pm - 4 pm
15 minutes: Check in, settle in, get your headphones
15 minutes: land acknowledgement + short naturalist talk followed by time for a short nature walk + forage around the park
60 minutes: a live deep listening musical and meditative experience made with local flora and fungi
30 minutes: Q+A and a short park cleanup
Location:
The exact location will be revealed closer to the date. This event is all ages. Kids are welcome. This event is rain or shine! I love working outside in all sorts of weather, but if it really pours down we have a back up indoor venue in Stoke's Croft.
What to bring:
- curiosity! and a sense of adventure
- rain or sun protection (depending on the weather)
- a blanket or chair to relax on
- snacks if you like!
- water for hydration!
About Modern Biology
Modern Biology is the new project of veteran musician Tarun Nayar. Formally trained in Indian Classical music and educated as a biologist, Modern Biology sees him turn a new leaf by bringing his passions together in an ambient project that is organismic, uplifting, and deeply contextual.
He uses modular synthesis, home built synthesizers and other analog equipment to improvise with the natural vibrations of a certain place and time - via plant bioelectricity, latent electromagnetic radiation, and even the earth’s resonant hum.
"I love creating surprising and beautiful musical experiences that bring us closer to nature and each other."
His work has been viewed 10s of millions of times after going viral on Tik Tok, and has been featured by The Guardian, BBC, Vice, Genius, The Verge, and Paul Stamets among others. Tarun's debut EP, Plant Music, Vol 1, has almost 450+K streams on Spotify and has received editorial support on their Music for Plants, Deep Listening, and Lava Lamp playlists. Tarun has recently brought his plant music experience to North America at Thing Festival, Basscoast, Northern Nights, MOCA LA and the Wonderland Psychedelic conference.
Tarun is passionate about protecting wild places and has committed the lion's share of the proceeds of this project to supporting the natural world.
