Psychedelic Chocolate - Cacao Ceremony in History, Pharmacology & Mythology

Come discover the historical roots of the Cacao Ceremony, how it combines with other psychedelics and why the tree Theobroma cacao, was named ‘food of the gods’. With it's venerable place in Mesoamerican mythology, Cacao may have been used ritually to commune with the souls of the dead, attract good fortune, and seal contracts with the gods. It was explicitly consumed with Psilocybe mushrooms at major celebrations.
Drawing on his field research in South America and his recently released book, Medicinal Herbalist Marcos Patchett investigates the historical authenticity of the “Cacao ceremony”, the pharmacology of Cacao and its interactions with other psychoactive plants.
Profit from this event will go to support APROCAV, a co-op of 26 small indigenous Mayan producers in Guatemala, producing some of what Marcos estimates to be the best cacao beans in the world but with no access to international markets.
About your Speaker
Marcos is a Western medical herbalist and student of medieval astrology. He worked as a medical herbalist in King’s Cross for several years (2005-2007 and 2012-2013) specialising in complementary care for people living with HIV, and practiced from Neal’s Yard remedies’ Therapy Rooms in Covent Garden for 9 years (2007-2016). He was clinical supervisor for Middlesex University’s Western Herbal Medicine BSc & MSc courses from 2013-2018. His first book, The Secret Life of Chocolate, was released March 2020.
