Beyond DMT: Near-death Neuroscience with Pascal Michael
Near-death experiences (NDEs) are complex subjective experiences, often triggered by life-threatening events. They can include feelings of leaving the body, a sense of peace, seeing a bright light, encountering deceased relatives or religious figures, and transcending space and time.
Those returning from an NDE often report long-term positive changes in psychological well-being, such as; greater concern for others, reductions in distress associated with the prospect of dying, increased appreciation for nature, reduced interest in social status and possessions, as well as increased self-worth.
Sound familiar?
Many of us with psychedelic experience may well recognise the aforementioned states and effects, and seek such experiences for their healing and transformational qualities. Ayahuasca, the ‘vine of the dead’, has been used for millennia for this purpose. So it is unsurprising that recent statistical analyses have found such drug-induced NDE-like experiences, such as NN-DMT or the ‘spirit molecule’, to be virtually identical to the classical near-death experience in which one is proximal to death.
But just how similar are they? And how might this illuminate what actually unfolds under the shadowy cerebral folds of the brain when a person dies?
Join us in London or via Livestream on Tuesday 30th August as we explore those questions and more with Pascal Michael, BSc, MSc.
Pascal will be sharing incredible experiences from the first conceived field study of DMT use, comparing them with the NDE, with a case-study of an influential near-death experiencer and his personal experience with 5-Methoxy-DMT. He will also discuss how the data from the study could be leveraged for the giving of these compounds to patients, including those facing death, as presently blooming under the psychedelic renaissance, and the ontological implications for drawing such linkages between drugged brain-states and exceptional human experiences.
Where: Juju's Bar and Stage, Ely's Yard, 15 Hanbury St, London E1 6QR
When: Tuesday 30th August 7pm-10pm
Arrive early to grab drinks and be seated, or socialise at the bar!
Livestream ticket holders will be sent a link to join via email.
About your speaker
Pascal Michael
Pascal BSc, MSc is a Psychology PhD candidate at the University of Greenwich, comparing the DMT experience and the near-death experience (NDE), with a view to establish the NDE as a psychedelic episode – indicated by their phenomenology and neural correlates, as well as their transformative and parapsychological effects. His interests lie in death and dying as an entangled continuum – existing at the levels of the molecular, humanistic, and transpersonal. He has presented at Breaking Convention and the Oxford University Psychedelic Society, and published in journals such as Frontiers. He is a coordinator for the ALEF Trust’s certificate in Psychedelics, ASCs and TP, and the 2020 recipient of the Schmeidler Outstanding Student Award.
