Webinar Description & Objectives
This webinar will aim to summarize medical literature pertaining to how stimulants and psychedelics interact with each other.
The official objectives for this webinar are to:
- Define stimulant mechanisms of action and summarize their interaction potential with commonly used psychedelics
- Discuss strategies for management of stimulants in the context of psychedelic therapy including tapering or temporarily suspending use
- Explore potential for psychedelic therapies to interface with attention deficit or stimulant use disorders
Psychostimulants (Stimulants) have long histories of use and have both recreational and therapeutic purposes. Used since time immemorial for increased stamina, wakefulness, or euphoric effects, contemporarily, they are commonly prescribed drugs for the management of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD), although are also used in psychiatry for treatment of narcolepsy, adjunctively to serotonin reuptake blocking antidepressants (e.g., bupropion) when fatigue is bothersome, or for management of binge-eating disorders (e.g., lisdexamfetamine).
While psychedelic assisted therapy (PAP) has not targeted ADHD, narcolepsy, or binge eating disorder in studies to date, many persons report microdosing psychedelics such as psilocybin or LSD for management of ADHD. Furthermore, psilocybin is being studied for the management of treatment resistant depression (TRD), body dysphoria, and several types of addictive disorders, thus may play a role in the management for several of these conditions soon.
Both psychedelics and stimulants can work to increase or boost monoamine neurotransmission and can raise cardiovascular parameters, yet their psychological effects on focus or attention, ego tonicity, and cortical processing are distinct. Overall, there is likely to be drug interaction potential between the two classes that may require skillful management to reduce harms and improve outcomes of psychedelic therapy.
