Airsmithery: An introduction to beatboxing with Jack Salt (for ages 16+)
Beatboxing is often assumed to be a skill that you either have or you don’t have. The truth is we are born with everything we need to explore this mysterious craft… a mouth, vocal cords and some imagination… and we were making rhythmical noises long before we could speak. This workshop will demonstrate how anyone can do it and how satisfying and liberating it is to communicate in a world beyond words. Participants will be introduced to beatbox sounds, rhythms and breathing in an accessible, playful way and are then encouraged to experiment, making up their own beats. We will also look at a well-known song, to focus on the different roles we can fulfil to make a complete rhythm.
About the facilitator:
Jack is a beatboxer, vocalist, guitarist, loop station artist, actor who is the beats behind numerous live music projects, most notably, Ushti Baba, Murmuration Choir and The Inexplicables. He has performed extensively in venues and festivals across the UK, Europe and Asia. His music has featured multiple times on BBC Radio 6 music and live on German TV. Jack is a beatbox tutor with over 10 years experience teaching individuals and groups of diverse ages, abilities and backgrounds in a wide variety of settings. This has included working with Bristol Beacon, Trinity Community Arts, and a youth project as part of Fuego a la Isla Festival in Germany. His online classes appeared on the BBC website as an inspiring outcome of the covid pandemic. He has also worked as a musician/actor on theatre productions with an environmental/feminist/social justice focus. Jack’s mission is to move and inspire people to make a positive impact in the world.
About your Hosts:
This workshop features as part of Murmuration Choir's newly-launched 2024 workshop programme, which aims to celebrate and share the incredible skills and insights of the arts practitioners we have worked with so far. If you are new to us, we are a contemporary vocal project led by Isoldè Freeth-Hale and accompanied by beatboxer Jack Salt, which brings together a collective of Bristol's singers who share an in interest in where popular music intersect with the promotion of wellbeing, community and love for nature. We specialise in collaborating with innovative artists in the creation of life-affirming new music. You might have met us performing and giving choral sound baths at Medicine Festival or Shambala, or collaborating with artists such as Cosmo Sheldrake, Martha Tilston and wildlife documentary maker, Martin Dorhn (BBC, David Attenborough). Check out our profile for all our workshops that are coming up, and find out more about the project or say hello via our website or instagram.
