HAPÉ CEREMONY & PREPARATION

Lead by Hushahu, her partner and her son.

Come and sit in prayer with the medicine of hapé. Prior to the serving, Hushahu will share some wisdom about the power and wisdom of this medicine. The hapé ceremony will then be accompanied with traditional Yawanawá songs and chants.

Please do not eat a heavy meal or any heavy foods up to 2 hours before the event.

WHAT IS HAPÉ?

Hapé is the preparation of powdered tobacco with the ash of a tree called Tsunu.

The medicine is administered through the nose.

To the Yawanawá, it is a very sacred and powerful medicine that is used as a form of prayer, to bring balance and healing.

ABOUT THE YAWANAWÁ

The YAWANAWÁ are an indigenous people living in the Amazon Rainforest. There are approximately 1,500 people living in 8 villages in the indigenous land alongside the river Gregório. They have a strong ancestral tradition of healing through their study of spirituality and with plant medicines.

They are one of the few tribes left in the world that have been able to hold onto their traditions. After decades of persecution and adversity, they have managed to survive and uphold their ancient traditions and deep connection to nature. Their culture is rich and alive with songs, colours, stories and dances. Their culture - each song and story is deeply rooted and holds connections to the rainforest and the natural world they live within.

FUNDRAISER | Centro Awavãna Project

During recent years Hushahu has worked to realise the project, CENTRO AWAVÃNA - a space of cultural and environmental preservation in which to also receive guests to study and discover the Amazon Rainforest. Since the start of the year they have received their first groups for diets and retreats, including two diet groups of Hushahu’s students from the Yawanawá youth.

Their next goals are to invest in a solar energy system and continue investing in planting indigenous fruit and vegetables, so the space can become even more independent and sustainable.

All profits raised from this event go towards funding the Centro Awavãna Project - so if you can, please choose a Supporter ticket option and/or add a donation on top of your chosen ticket.

HUSHAHU YAWANAWÁ

HUSHAHU was the first woman who entered into a shamanic study in the story of her people. Before her this path was only open to the men of the tribe. As a young woman curious to discover the world of the Pajés (Shamans), she asked her father Tuinkuru if she could study and eventually he and Pajé Tata accepted her on the path. She did a diet of 1 year and 3 months isolated in the forest with her teachers.

During her diet she began to discover the world of the Pajés as a woman, expressing this through her art and her voice, bringing a female voice to the traditional songs. Today the designs that she received are used in the artworks of many different tribes in Brazil. Following her diet Hushahu continued to study with Tata until his death and the path of spirituality opened for the women of the tribe. Today many women are studying and singing as equals to the men in ceremony.

Today Hushahu is one of the spiritual leaders of her village Mutum and is dedicated to keeping the tradition of her people alive. She has many students among the youth of the village as well as from the world outside the forest where she travels and holds works for those who wish to study. She is a great inspiration for female empowerment of the Yawanawá tribe and for women around the world.

Hushahu continues to work on her Centro Awavãna project, which began as a dream of her father's which holds the intention of allowing the continuation of the Yawanawá culture and spirituality.
