Hi there,

As most people in long-term relationships know, the hardest part of coupledom isn't really finding the right person, it's staying honest and authentic once you have. We start out open, and then somewhere along the way we learn to manage each other instead of really meeting each other. The conversations that might actually clear the air become the very ones we're too scared to have. And this is the knot that researchers keep poking at with psychedelics. Long before MDMA was banned in the mid-1980s, therapists were using it with couples, finding that it helped partners get past communication blocks they'd been stuck on for years.

Why does it work? MDMA seems to quiet the amygdala, our built-in threat detector, while nudging up oxytocin, empathy and a feeling of closeness - toning down the fear of getting hurt that makes us so defensive with the people we love. Psilocybin and LSD have their own version of this: studies have linked their effects to more trust, empathy and a genuine pull toward other people. And the honesty points inward as much as outward - people report feeling more like their authentic selves, less afraid of being judged, and more willing to talk openly about emotional memories in altered states. Being honest with a partner, it turns out, usually starts with being honest with yourself.

A 2026 survey of about 800 people, 81 of them couples, also found that going through a psychedelic experience together rather than separately was tied to a stronger sense of shared reality and real gains in intimacy, closeness and satisfaction, and a pilot trial that paired MDMA with couples therapy reported better relationship satisfaction and post-traumatic growth. But, as always, the substance doesn't do the work. Lowered defences can surface difficult and long-standing pain - it's how you work through it together after is what matters. This is tender ground…

If any of this resonates, we're digging into it properly in an online session, Psychedelics & Relationships: Rewiring Love, Intimacy, and Emotional Connection, with psychedelic-assisted couples therapist Sarah Tilley on Wednesday 17th June. It's a warm, honest look at what really shifts when people meet themselves - and each other - in altered states. Come along.
