It’s not only the spookiest time of year… mushroom season is in full swing too!
Join us for a nighttime wander through central London’s parks with UV torches to discover the spectacular world of fungal biofluorescence.
We’ll begin with introductions and a warming medicinal mushroom tea before heading into the park to behold the stranger side of the city.
Once the ultraviolet lights come on, the familiar starts to shift. Fungi, lichens and other natural materials reveal colours and patterns our eyes would normally miss, turning the woodland into a vivid, otherworldly landscape hiding just beyond ordinary perception.
We’ll move slowly, following whatever glows, fluoresces or catches our curiosity, while learning about the fungi and ecology around us.
We’ll discuss how biofluorescence works, why certain organisms fluoresce, and why changing the way we look can reveal an entirely different version of the world around us.
Throughout the walk, we’ll identify our finds and dive into fungal ecology, culture, myth, art, and science. You’ll also have the chance to experiment with UV-reactive dye made from mushrooms at the end.
No specialist knowledge needed, just curiosity, warm clothes and a willingness to spend an autumn evening poking around in the dark. Fungi-themed fancy dress is highly encouraged!
Please note: this is an observational walk, not a foraging event. We won’t be collecting or consuming psychedelic mushrooms.
Under 18s are very welcome when accompanied by an adult, but everyone attending will need their own ticket. Children are welcome.
UV torches will be provided but do feel free to bring your own if you have one (a 365nm black torch is best).

YOUR FACILITATOR
Kit Ondaatje Rolls

Kit Ondaatje Rolls is a biodesigner, fungi researcher, and author.
She holds an MA in Biodesign from Central Saint Martins, where she specialised in regenerative systems and mycelium-based materials. After graduating, she worked at Bristol Fungarium, running her own lab/studio and creating their limited-edition mycelium packaging.
Kit grew up foraging for edible mushrooms with her Latvian grandmother and continues to incorporate wild mushrooms into her diet. She is a member of the Association of Foragers and recently completed the Wildbiome Project for the second time, in which 120 foragers ate only wild food for three months to explore its effects on various health parameters and the gut microbiome.
In 2025, Kit founded the London Native Fungi Library, a living genetic archive of edible and medicinal mushroom strains sourced from Greater London, which she cultivates and extracts into native mushroom tinctures.
Passionate about biodiversity and education, Kit has led mushroom cultivation, mycofabrication, and ecology talks, walks, and workshops internationally and for a wide range of ages. Her work explores the ecological, cultural, and creative worlds of fungi, encouraging deeper engagement with the natural world. Her first book, FUNGI: Creatures & Cultures, was published by Watkins earlier this year.
