Welcoming the Outcast

We see the landscape of grief as much broader than bereavement. People often feel that grief itself is not welcome. It includes a huge range of feelings that may show up in response to any loss, change, or challenge. Crossbones Graveyard has a long history of providing space to welcome that which has been excluded in other places. We will come together in this unique space to explore and welcome the outcast – in ourselves, in our experience, in the wider world. How that shows up in each person will be different.

Workshop Outline

We will offer a brief introduction to the landscape of grief, and offer a series of exercises to inspire thoughtful reflection, personal creative responses, symbolic ritual and group solidarity. Everything we offer is optional, and we welcome people taking care of their needs in the space. No skill or previous experience is necessary.

Is This For Me?

Would you like to spend time in Crossbones’ Garden of Remembrance engaging in creative reflection? Have you ever experienced not belonging, or the grief that comes with loss or change? Perhaps you wish to honour someone or something, past, present or future. Or just spend time with others in this special place. If any or all of these ring true, we’d love to welcome you.

Cost

We will invite people to make a cash donation on the day to support Crossbones Graveyard and Garden of Remembrance.

We will be working outdoors, so please bring appropriate clothing. There are some chairs, but we recommend bringing something for comfort if you choose to sit on the ground. We will suggest moving around the garden, but this could be minimal. Please note there are uneven surfaces. Art materials will be included. You are welcome to bring drinks and snacks.

Crossbones itself is wheelchair accessible but unfortunately there are certain areas of the site that are not. Please let us know if you have any accessibility requirements that we can help you with.

Wonderfully held, expertly facilitated, safe and loving space. This is a real community of grief tenders who are making grief tending possible as a regular practice in 'the village'. For any and all kinds of grief, big or small. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Sarah, Tony, and Bilal created such a beautiful, safe, and contained space for our grief. I felt welcomed and at ease with them and the others who I shared the experience with- I'd recommend this circle to anyone who is looking to deeply explore their grief and tend to it in a gentle, supportive way. Thank you all- I'd love to come back in the future for another circle. x

So beautifully held. I was pretty anxious in the lead up but there was no need to be, the process was guided with exquisite care, tenderness and humour. Felt a big release and a lot of joy interspersed with the moving grief.
