Death, Dying & Psychedelics - Film Screening and live Q&A

Join us for an exclusive screening of a brand new 45-minute documentary ‘Death, Dying & Psychedelics’. The film explores the stories of scientists, clinicians, and subjects of academic studies at NYU and UCLA researching the use of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of anxiety for those facing life-threatening illness.

This film and new wave of research comes at a timely moment, when families, communities, care providers, and governments are struggling with the ongoing impact of COVID-19, which has led to over 374,000 deaths in the United States, and over 1.9 million deaths worldwide. The film aims to help people better understand the challenges that medical and mental health care providers face in supporting patients whose illnesses are potentially terminal, and the potential for psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy to decrease anxiety and suffering and offer peace and insight to those who may face their imminent mortality.

Following the 40-minute documentary screening, we will hold a panel discussion (approx. 1 hour 15 mins) with the film’s director, people who feature in the documentary, as well as one of the Psychedelic Society’s much-loved hosts of ‘The Death Cafe’. 

SPEAKER PROFILES:

Anthony P. Bossis

Anthony P. Bossis, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine conducting FDA-approved research with the psychedelic compound psilocybin since 2009. Dr. Bossis was director of palliative care research and co-principal investigator on a clinical trial demonstrating a reduction in emotional distress from a single psilocybin session in persons with cancer and is study director on a clinical trial evaluating psilocybin-generated mystical experience upon religious leaders. Dr. Bossis has a long-standing interest in comparative religion, mystical experience, and the interface of psychology and spirituality. He maintains a private psychotherapy and consulting practice in NYC.

Dinah Bazer

Dinah Bazer is an ice skating instructor, retired IT professional, and grandmother in Brooklyn, New York who participated in a psilocybin therapy study at NYU in order to seek treatment for overwhelming anxiety about cancer.

Stephanie Hope

Doctor of Nursing Practice and Therapy session guide for NYU psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy for terminal anxiety disorder study. Stephanie Hope, DNP, RN is a registered nurse, certified nurse coach, and recent graduate of the University of Minnesota’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program in the specialty of Integrative Health and Healing. Stephanie has worked for the last 10 years in the nursing fields of oncology, hospice, and health coaching. She is passionate about the role that nurses can play in their patients’ personal growth and transformation, particularly in the areas of conscious dying and the evolving field of entheogenic therapy. She currently resides with her partner in an intentional community in New York’s Hudson Valley.

Bilal Nasim

Bilal Nasim is a facilitator, trainer and artist exploring what it means to be alive and our relationship with death. Bilal hosts workshops on confronting death, “Death Cafes”, and is training as a death doula with Red Tent End Of Life Doulas. Having apprenticed to grief under the tutelage of Sophy Banks and Jeremy Thres, he has been holding grief-spaces since 2018. Bilal is also a personal resilience trainer with Tough Cookie.

Kevin Balktick

Kevin Balktick is the founder & director of Horizons Media, Inc. In 2007, he convened the first Horizons conference in New York City in order to help further the public’s understanding and perception of psychedelics. He has been a cultural entrepreneur for the last fifteen years, with an oeuvre including arts and entertainment experiences, festivals, conferences, exhibitions, across a variety of settings, including churches, warehouses, fortresses, libraries, mansions, prisons, universities, city streets, and the great outdoors. His work has been featured in The New York Times, National Public Radio, The New Yorker, Vogue, WWD, Vice, Hospitality Design, Wired, NHT (Japan), The Guardian (UK), Ha’aretz (Israel), and other publications.

We will send out a recording of the panel discussion to all ticket holders within a week of the event taking place. The film will not be included in the recording.
