Unlocking The Psychedelic Mind with Dr. Chris Timmermann

This 10-week live online course dives into the cutting edge of psychedelic neuroscience with Dr. Chris Timmermann

Also includes 2 optional in-person London Socials to meet your psychedelic community

About the Course

This immersive online course dives into the therapeutic effects of psychedelics, the intersection between psychedelics and meditation, and their role in unlocking creativity and flow states. You’ll journey through ancient wisdom traditions and modern scientific frameworks, learning how these tools can support emotional healing, neuroplasticity, and expanded states of awareness. Grounded in neuroscience and rich with philosophical insight, the course offers a deep, critical look at the potential of psychedelics to contribute to mental health, human flourishing, and the future of consciousness itself.

We’ll explore how psychedelics impact brain networks, perception, and the sense of self, and how these changes relate to neuroplasticity, mental health, and personal transformation. From the mechanisms behind ego dissolution to the therapeutic potential of compounds like psilocybin, DMT, and 5-MeO-DMT. Along the way, we’ll connect the dots between ancient practices and contemporary research - from shamanic traditions to fMRI scanners.

Each session blends science, philosophy, and critical discussion. You’ll learn about emerging clinical models, non-ordinary states of consciousness, and the ethical and cultural tensions shaping the psychedelic renaissance.

Who is This Course For?

This course is for anyone curious about the science, culture, and potential of psychedelics — whether you’re a seasoned psychonaut, a wellness practitioner, a researcher, or simply neuro-curious.

Curriculum:

Module 1: The Many Faces of Psychedelic Neuroscience

Explore how psychedelics are reshaping our understanding of the brain, therapy, and culture. We’ll dive into the foundations of psychedelic neuroscience and how these substances may enhance the brain’s ability to adapt and change - a process known as neuroplasticity.

Lecture 1: Psychedelics at the intersection between neuroscience, therapy, and society

Lecture 2: The basics of psychedelic phenomenology, neuroscience, and neuroplasticity

Module 2: Psychedelics, Consciousness, and Healing

What do psychedelics reveal about the nature of consciousness and the experience of self?
We’ll explore their therapeutic potential across a wide range of therapeutic conditions, and how they seem to alter the very structure of our conscious experience.

Lecture 3: Therapeutic effects of psychedelics

Lecture 4: Psychedelics, the self, and consciousness

Module 3: Models and Minds: The Neuroscience and Phenomenology of Psychedelics

This week explores how psychedelics reshape consciousness from brain to body. We’ll unpack leading models like REBUS, neural entropy, and brain loop disruption — and dive into how lived experience, embodiment, and environment play a role through the lens of psychedelic neurophenomenology.

Lecture 5: Models of psychedelic neuroscience: REBUS, entropy, and brain loops.

Lecture 6: Embodied, extended, and enactive: Psychedelic neurophenomenology.

Module 4:  Into the Depths: DMT, 5-MeO-DMT, and the Edges of Consciousness

What happens to the brain (and the self) in the most intense psychedelic states? Do psychedelics truly reveal the essence of consciousness? We’ll look at cutting-edge research into powerful compounds like DMT and 5-MeO-DMT, and how they intersect with deep meditative states and traditions.

Lecture 7: The neuroscience DMT and 5-MeO-DMT and the deconstruction of consciousness

Lecture 8: The intersection between psychedelics and meditation

Module 5 - New Frontiers: Creativity, Flow, and the Future

How might psychedelics unlock creative insight or enhance performance? We’ll close by exploring emerging applications - from enhancing creativity and flow states to reimagining the future of psychedelic neuroscience and its role in human flourishing.

Lecture 9: Psychedelics, creativity, and flow states

Lecture 10: Psychedelic apprenticeship and the future of psychedelic neuroscience

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the core principles of psychedelic neuroscience, including neuroplasticity, brain network modulation, and models like REBUS and neural entropy.
  • Describe how psychedelics affect perception, cognition, and the experience of self, and connect these changes to broader theories of consciousness.
  • Identify the therapeutic potential and risks associated with compounds like psilocybin, DMT, and 5-MeO-DMT, including their emerging clinical applications.
  • Critically assess the ethical, cultural, and social dimensions of psychedelic use in both clinical and traditional contexts.
  • Compare and contrast ancient and modern frameworks for working with non-ordinary states, including shamanic practices and meditation-based insights.
  • Articulate how psychedelics may enhance creativity, support emotional healing, and alter patterns of thought and behavior.
  • Engage in informed discussion about the future of psychedelic research and its potential contributions to mental health, neuroscience, and human flourishing.
  • Integrate philosophical and phenomenological perspectives to better understand the subjective dimensions of psychedelic experiences.

Your Teacher

Dr. Chris Timmermann is a neuroscientist exploring with over 12 years of experience in psychedelics and consciousness science. He obtained his PhD in Neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London, where he led the world’s first brain imaging studies of DMT - one of the most powerful psychedelics known. Until 2025, he headed the DMT Research Group at Imperial College London, conducting pioneering work on both DMT and 5-MeO-DMT, and contributing to their clinical development for depression.

He is now based at University College London (UCL), where he co-directs the UCL Centre for Consciousness Research. His research spans from psychedelics and breathwork to meditation and other non-ordinary states, with a focus on their therapeutic potential and their power to illuminate the nature of the consciousness.

Chris has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers, with his work featured in The New York Times, BBC, CBC, WIRED, and The Guardian. He also designs and teaches university-level courses on psychedelic science.

In 2022, he founded the ECOH Foundation - a non-profit in Latin America dedicated to public education and research on psychedelics, science, and mind.
