Words From the Other Side: Poetry as a Practice for Altered States with Ryan Khan

There are some things that simply cannot be put into words, some experiences that resist language. This is often inherent to experiences of altered states of consciousness. In this workshop, we will explore poetry as a modality to defy this phenomenon, not only as a technique for creative exploration and expression, but for meaning-making, integrated emotional catharsis, and processing.

About

This 2-hour workshop explores poetry as a method for delving into experiences of altered states of consciousness. We'll move through grounding practices and sensory exploration, into playful, low-pressure writing prompts, individual reflection and small group exercises using creative writing as a form of both preparation and integration.

In the second part of the workshop, there will be a voluntary opportunity to share, to listen with attunement to what surfaced for others, and to meet like-minded people in a warm, alcohol-free environment.

This workshop aims to loosen the ego's grip of "good writing" or "being a creative, a poet, a writer," and get closer to your true and authentic self-expression. Poetry doesn't need to follow rules, it can be long or short, meticulous or wonderfully random. You set your own parameters and depth.

Whether you're sitting on a half-formed memory of an experience that deeply impacted you, simply curious about what happens when altered states meet language, or looking for a new way to express your emotional landscape, this is your invitation to put pen to paper and see what comes out. No experience with creative writing or psychedelics is required, just curiosity.

Hidden away in Hackney Wick, The Bungalow is a creative hub: a light filled space built on the idea that good work needs room to breathe. No frills, no clutter, just somewhere to sit, think and make, off-grid from the usual noise. The Wick has always pulled in artists, designers, makers and writers. It's that kind of pocket of East London and The Bungalow runs with it: a characterful spot for small gatherings and workshops. Exact location will be shared upon ticket purchase.

Your Facilitator & Organiser

Ryan Khan is a poet and the founder of Poets On The Spot, bringing workshops, talks, and Poet for Hire services to festivals, retreats, and events across the UK and Europe. His debut poetry collection, Dancing with Pachamama: A Poet on the Spot in Peru, has been submitted to Button Poetry for publication.

Ryan works as an Online Events Coordinator for The Psychedelic Society and is completing his MSc in Psychedelics: Mind, Medicine & Culture at the University of Exeter, where he specialises in the extra-pharmacological factors affecting psychedelic-assisted therapy. He sits at the intersection of psychedelic research, education, and therapy — working as a Research Associate at Pneuma Science, a Consultant at Psilonautica, and Communications & Partnerships Associate at Beautiful Space.
