Dear there,

It's Faye here.

This season of Samhain invites us to reconnect with something ancient and powerful—the inner witch within each of us.

I wonder…what does the word “witch” bring up for you?

Even as I write it, I feel a familiar hesitation. Should I use this word? Wouldn’t “mystic” or “wise woman” feel safer?  But that’s precisely the point.

For centuries, “witch” has been distorted into something dark and fearful—a label used to control women who dared to claim their own power. Women who understood the earth’s rhythms, practiced healing, or lived by intuition were often branded as dangerous.

Historically, women who understood herbs and healing, who listened to their intuition, or who lived independently were seen as a threat. During the witch trials in Europe and North America, countless women were persecuted, often for nothing more than asserting their independence or challenging societal norms. The “witch” became a label to demonize women who didn’t conform, who were bold enough to live in tune with their own truth.

But the true meaning of “witch” has always been simpler and more beautiful: a woman in tune with herself, her wisdom, and the natural world.

(If you want to explore embodying the witch archetype more this season, Boe Huntress is running an event in London to support you with this.)

5 Ways to Connect with Your Inner Witch

Samhain isn’t just one night; it’s an entire season—a powerful six-week journey until the Winter Solstice, inviting us into inner work, healing, and reclaiming our strength.

Here are some ways to connect with your inner witch during this potent time:

Honour Your Ancestors

Samhain is a time when the veil between worlds is thinnest, making it ideal for connecting with those who came before us. Set up a simple ancestral altar with photos, letters, or objects that remind you of your roots. Light a candle in their honour, or simply sit quietly, inviting their guidance and strength into your life. This act not only connects you with your lineage but also reminds you of the resilience and wisdom passed down through generations.

This evening Alex Ioanno is leading a Samhain Ceremony for The Women's Fire exploring ancestral lineage and healing - join today and come along. The workshop along with a range of other resources will be added to to our Death & Transformation page in our Women's Fire Members Area. (

Connect with the Natural World

Take time to go outside and notice the shift of the season. Walk among the changing leaves, feel the crisp air, and ground yourself in nature. This connection can be as simple as sitting under a tree, placing your hands on the earth, or gathering seasonal plants and herbs for your home. Nature is one of our greatest allies, offering grounding, wisdom, and a reminder of our place within the larger web of life.

On Wednesday explore what it would be like to be, in deep reciprocal relationship with the living world around us at Unearthing Soul: Rites and Rituals of Nature Connection and Soul Revelation

Explore Tarot and Intuition

Tarot is a wonderful tool for tapping into your intuition. Pull a card each morning or set up a longer reading to explore what you’re ready to release or embrace this season. Think of tarot as a mirror reflecting your inner truth.

Also for  members of The Women's Fire, we have a workshop on 19th November as an introduction to using tarot.

Practice Womb Work and Body Connection

The womb is often seen as a center of creativity, intuition, and feminine power. Womb work—whether through meditation, gentle movement, or simply placing your hands over your lower abdomen and breathing deeply—can help you reconnect with your body’s natural wisdom. This is a time to listen deeply, honoring both your body’s rhythms and your inner voice.

Bryony Rose is offering a beautiful range of events to support you with this both in-person and online

Engage in Inner Reflection and Self-Inquiry

The darkening days are an invitation to turn inward, reflecting on what we’re ready to let go of and what we wish to call in. Journaling, meditation, and other reflective practices can help you access your inner truth.

Samhain’s energy is a powerful guide for deep, transformative inner work. Let’s use this season to reconnect with our wisdom, release what no longer serves us, and step boldly into the path of our inner witch.

We've loved listening to Witch, a BBC Radio 4 podcast about what it means to be a modern witch. Have a listen and let us know what you think.
