A Day Workshop to Celebrate Equinox Crafting Your Own Drum Under the Ancient Trees of Epping Forest.

All attendees will come away with a homemade drum.

We will sit on the forest floor under a huge centenary tree, a sacred space that many are magnetised towards. The embrace of the forest is truly inspirational. Get ready to feel your senses, connect with the elements, move your hands, use your muscles, and push through this birth, reflecting on how your body and mind respond to each step of the process.

This drum making becomes a ceremony as we honour the cycles of life, and the contribution of each of us, including plants and animals, to continue the cycle beyond the timelines of death. Together we will bring some offerings to Mother Nature for all that she gives us, in this time of balance, outside in as inside out.

You will be invited to tune in, so that you can be fully present in the birthing of your new drum. A drum is an instrument, a tool that has been used over generations by healers, mystics and shamans to access other states of consciousness and realms, to communicate with the spirit world and channel the forces of those who want to help. This presence will allow you to listen to the drum language. By the end, you will leave with a drum of your own making.

Drum Description

Size: The drums are made out of 18" Willow tree frames (contact Api if you would prefer a different size)

Hide: You can chose making your drum with:

• Goat from Mali (Africa). This African land is where drums are born and the Earth sings the polyrhythms of life. Such wisdom of Mamma Africa coming to us. You'll be supporting small African communities that live out of stock. No fur, most times dark brown colour.
• Deer from Sussex. These animals ram free on British land and the whole process is dealt with a high level of respect and conscious choices. These are more expensive hides, an extra price for these high quality skins that support local small businesses and conscious ways of living. No fur, white/beige/yellow-ish colour.

Drum beaters will also be made.

Timing

• 10.30am - 6pm

Location: Epping Forest

Meeting point 10.30am at Bury Car Park, E4 7QJ, Chingford, London - closest station Chingfor Overground Station.
From there, we will walk to the oak tree (15-20 minutes walk).

Please, plan your trip so that you arrive with extra time to avoid delaying the start of the workshop.

What to Bring

• Waterproof mat/cushion to sit on the forest floor (in case of rain, we will hide under the cover of trees)
• Appropriate comfortable clothes for the outdoors
• Food and water
• If you feel called to contribute to the altar, bring an offering to Mother Earth that will stay in the forest under the oak tree (no glass/no plastic)

Bring strong scissors (important to get some that are sharp and strong), sharp Stanley Knife and ruler or measuring tape.

Api Ascaso

Api is an explorative and vibrant soul whose musical abilities reunite together to create expressive, eclectic and soulful music. Her fascination for world-music, mysticism, human evolution and nature continue influencing her offerings and compositions. Api’s signature is the strength of an incredible versatile raw voice that seems to travel through time and space with an intimate balance between the earthy feminine and universal masculine forces. This, accompanied by the several world-instruments that she presents with delicacy. Api’s musical exploration melts with her high sensitivity to feel space and the energies involved around. Her language is music and her mastery her genuine improvisation skills, at service of the present moment. Her music is an invitation to breathe deeply, making a n exercise of self-enquiry and journeying into the unknown that belongs uniquely to you.

Api has been running individual and group voice work sessions for 5 years, helping those who want to gain confidence in using their voice and expand their musical abilities. Api has over 2 decades of experience as Occupational Therapist working with the most vulnerable children and their families. She has a deep understanding of neurodivergence and continuous working for children with non-verbal Autism. Api also  has a strong background as energy healer, space holder and retreat facilitator. Her concoction of skills, including  being  a mother of 2, come together with her playful and honest personality, a mediterranean flavour and a deep presence. A motherly energy that is at service of the client and/or group's needs.

Your Organiser

Kate is an event coordinator at the Psychedelic Society. Her research background spans clinical sleep studies, altered states of consciousness, and personalised gene therapies. She currently works applying neuroscience to the arts at the neuroaesthetics lab, Kinda Studios. Working with Onaya Science, she explores how rituals, music, and plant medicines support trauma recovery. Kate brings curiosity and care to the ways we feel, connect, and transform (and will usually be found outside).
