Eating disorders are widespread across the globe, impacting an estimated 3.4 million people in the UK alone. However, effective treatment remains a significant challenge. Fewer than half of those with bulimia and anorexia fully recover, and anorexia continues to have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder.

There is growing interest in using psychedelics to treat eating disorders. Clinical trials are currently investigating psilocybin and ketamine as potential treatments for anorexia and binge-eating disorder, and therapies are also being explored for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and bulimia. Individuals who have used psychedelics in both ceremonial and recreational settings have reported transformative changes in their outlook on life, health, and their relationship with food.

In this panel discussion, we’ll examine the promises and challenges of using psychedelics to treat eating disorders, drawing on personal stories, neuroscience, and psycho-spiritual insights. We’ll explore how psychedelics could aid in eating disorder recovery and explore how to navigate this pathway to healing.

Whether you’ve experienced an eating disorder, work in mental health, or are simply interested, we invite you to join this important and vulnerable conversation. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions during a Q&A session, and all ticket holders will receive a recording of the event.

About The Speakers

Dr Adele Lafrance

Adele is a clinical psychologist, research scientist, author and developer of emotion-focused treatment modalities. She is active in the research and practice of psychedelic medicine for eating disorders, with a focus on ayahuasca, MDMA, psilocybin and ketamine. Adele has a particular interest in mechanisms and models of healing, including emotion processing, spirituality, love, and family-based psychedelic medicine. Dr Charlotte Bamber

Charlotte is a medical doctor who is trained in anthroposophical psychotherapy. She offers support from a holistic perspective and holds space for psychedelic integration. She works for the TaoZen Family as a space holder, preparation, and integration therapeutic practitioner at Medicine Retreats in Spain. She also teaches Hatha and Yin Yoga and runs Cacao Ceremonies.

Charlotte has recovered from Anorexia, having suffered from the age of 13 up until 32 years, now being 36. Her recovery was heavily influenced by psychedelics, particularly Psilocybin, LSD, Ayahuasca, and MDMA, coupled with mainstream psychiatric support and also other holistic practices sought out by herself.

Charlotte believes in a mind-body, soul-spirit approach to healing. She believes it is possible to come to a healthy, balanced space free from suffering with the right support from various modalities.

Martha Allitt

Martha is an educator, writer, events organizer, and yoga teacher. She has a degree in neuroscience, and her work centers mostly on psychedelics and mental health. She has published numerous articles on psychedelic science, culture, and policy and runs regular events for the Psychedelic Society focusing on these themes.

In her early teens, Martha was hospitalized for anorexia, which sparked her passion for raising awareness about alternative treatments for eating disorders. Her recovery journey led her to yoga, and she now teaches regular classes in Bristol. Having had profound experiences with psychedelics herself, she is deeply invested in ongoing research exploring the potential of psychedelics in treating eating disorders.
