MycoBim is a Barbados-based community initiative founded by Darren Le Baron and Errol McCollin, both with UK and Barbadian heritage. Launched in June 2024, MycoBim is dedicated to promoting the benefits of fungi and building a myco-centric community that supports both people and the land. Its mission blends education, wellness, and ecological restoration, with a focus on mycology's potential for healing, sustainability and cultural connection.

Last October, MycoBim hosted their first MycoBim Mushroom Wellness Retreat, an immersive journey into the enchanting world of fungi combining ancient wisdom with cutting-edge research. The following month, MycoBim brought together the UK's leading mycological experts from All Things Fungi, Bristol Fungarium, and MycoPunks with local island specialists to conduct a national fungi survey. The two-week survey covered selected locations across the island. Over 100 species were recorded, with this number expected to increase once DNA results are complete.

Registration is free, with optional donations welcome.

TEAM:

Darren Le Baron is a world renowned researcher, mycologist, and mushroom cultivator with over 15 years of experience in the field. He's known for his compelling workshops and presentations on ethnomycology, which participants often describe as life changing. With his thought-provoking slogan, "You Are A Mushroom Having A Human Experience," Darren assists participants in designing and developing their unique approach to healing with mushrooms. His expertise spans from traditional medicinal applications to modern cultivation techniques, making him a bridge between ancient wisdom and contemporary scientific understanding.

Errol McCollin is a pioneer in forging international relationships and success in the Caribbean. Twenty years working within the region has resulted in Errol developing a reputation as a trusted and solution focused leader within the arena of start-ups, tourism, marketing and wellbeing in the Caribbean. His business success and extensive Caribbean knowledge has resulted in having a strong committed team and reliable network within the region.

Max Mudie is a photographer whose lens has been focused on Fungi & Myxomycetes for the past 7 years but his connection with fungi stems back over 20 years. His imagery has gained him recognition with international platforms and magazines. His deep dive into mycology means he's found and identified hundreds if not thousands of species, many of which we know little about. He is also the co-founder of All Things Fungi Festival, the UK’s first weekend camping and Fungi-specific educational event.

Tom Baxter founder of Bristol Fungarium is ever conscious of the unfolding ecological collapse that confronts us, Tom chose to make the fateful move away from city chatter to find meaning through working the land in 2008. After a few educational years establishing his organic vegetable farm and following 2 decades of largely unsuccessful excursions foraging for mushrooms, from the foothills of the pyrenees to the siberian steppes, Tom experienced a revelation during a mushroom cultivation course he attended in 2018. In 2019 he downed tools on the farm and invested all he had into creating The Bristol Fungarium, producing the UK's first organic certified medicinal mushrooms.

Chris Dowdeswell, MycoPunks founder was working for 25 years in the tech industry Chris’ love for coding was fading, and he wanted out. He decided to follow the late mycologist Gary Lincoff's advice—quit his job and dedicate his life to mushrooms. Chris started growing gourmet mushrooms at home and wanted to make cultivation his full-time vocation. However, almost every step of gathering supplies for his new business venture was a headache. Chris realised chat he could make this amazing subculture more accessible by simplifying the sourcing of suitable equipment and resources for mycology. He shifted from growing mushrooms to offering equipment and supplies, and MycoPunks was born in 2021. Since then, they've grown to nine employees and over 18,000 customers. Working closely with global manufacturers, MycoPunks has been at the forefront of bringing innovative products and techniques to the UK, and now Barbados.

Chantel Selman is a trailblazer in holistic health and wellness, specialising in iridology, Caribbean herbal remedies, juice cleanses, and raw vegan cuisine. Kory Lashley is an innovative plant-based chef who specialises in alkaline and vegan cuisine, with a particular focus on mushroom-based gastronomy. Through extensive formal education and personal research in health and nutrition, he has developed a unique scientific approach to crafting nourishing meals. His expertise lies in transforming functional mushrooms and whole plant ingredients into delectable dishes that both heal and delight. During the immersion, he will be demonstrating his culinary mastery through interactive cooking sessions, serving gourmet mushroom inspired dishes, and sharing his knowledge about crafting nutritious tonics and elixirs.

Elle Kennedy who, after 14 years in the world of sales & marketing across Europe & Asia and a lifetime of interest in natural alternative and complementary medicine, found herself on a mushroom farm back in her heartland of Bristol in 2020 and was tasked with putting her skills to better use; launching the Bristol Fungarium brand. When she isn't playing mushroom paparazzi, Elle spends her time studying Western Medical Herbalism with Heartwood, part of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists.
