What is Ecstatic Dance?
Ecstatic dance is a freeform, music-driven movement practice where you’re invited to let go, move however your body feels, with whoever you want, including by yourself, and fully immerse yourself in the rhythms without judgment or expectation. Unlike traditional dance classes or club settings, there are no set steps, no talking on the dance floor, and no need to perform — it’s all about self-expression, connection, and presence. After a short guided optional warm-up, the experience begins with gentle music, gradually building into energetic, uplifting beats, and then winding down into softer, grounding sounds, creating a natural journey through movement. You have the freedom to dance entirely on your own or to connect and share movement with others if it feels right in the moment.
People come to ecstatic dance for different reasons: some to release stress, some to explore creativity, and others simply to enjoy the sense of community with like-minded people in a welcoming, supportive space. It can feel like both a workout and a meditation, leaving you energized, clear-headed, and deeply connected to yourself and the group around you. Whether you love dancing or think you “can’t dance,” ecstatic dance is for everyone — it’s not about how you look, but how you feel.
What to expect?
18:30 doors open
19:00 opening circle, guided somatic solo warmup, optional connection and boundary management exercises
19:45 ecstatic dance wave (guided only by the music)
21:15 chill and chat by the fire, tea, fruits
22:00 doors close
Please arrive on time so that we can have this journey together.
Note that this is a small, cosy event with maximum 25 people. Spaces fill quickly—booking in advance is recommended.
About Plot 9
Plot 9, once a derelict council allotment, has been transformed by the artist Andy Millns into an enchanted community garden and gathering space; a hidden oasis in the urban space.
This magical place features two repurposed parachutes which act like a cover from the rain and the scorching sun. We will light a small bonfire in the chill area for anyone taking a rest from dancing and wanting to warm up.
Note that there is no bar at this venue, but we provide a limited amount of drinking water, and will serve tea and light snacks at the end. Feel free to bring your own water bottle and non-alcoholic drinks, we welcome refillable flasks.
Parking: restrictions are in place just outside the plot, however the nearby streets have free parking after 16:30, for example on Dinsdale road
Accessibility: Please note the plot has steps and uneven surfaces, so it’s unfortunately not fully wheelchair accessible. Light assistance is available for navigating the stairs if needed.
Closest station: Maze Hill station is only a few steps away, served by Thameslink and Southeastern trains.

What to bring?
- Loose, comfy clothes in layers (we are outdoors, it can get cold in the evening)

Photos & Videos
We ask the participants not to use their phones during the dance. Hence, photographs and videos are not allowed on the dance floor.
However, we may take a few short photos for promotional purposes, but we’ll do our best to avoid showing anyone in a recognisable way. We will never share identifiable images without consent. If you’d prefer not to appear at all, just let us know.
Prices
Tickets are tiered; please choose the price that matches your financial situation.
We believe everyone should have access to the healing power of music and dance. If you can't afford a ticket, please contact us and we'll find a solution.
Guidelines
1. No Talking on the Dance Floor
Use movement, sound, or expression instead of words. If you need to talk, please use the chill-out space by the entrance. Quiet conversations are allowed by the fire.
2. Dance Your Own Way
There are no right or wrong moves. Follow your body, your breath, your emotions. Dance alone or with others. There is no judgment. Dance barefoot if you can, for grounding and freedom. Please no shoes on the blanketed area.
3. Respect Boundaries
Honour your own needs and those of others. Always seek (non-verbal) consent before any partner dance or touch. A “no” is a “no,” and a “maybe” counts as a “no” too. Avoid public displays of affection and any gestures that might make others uncomfortable.
4. No Booze
Ecstatic Dance is about natural presence. Please arrive sober and stay present throughout the journey.
5. No Phones or Cameras
Keep technology away from the dance floor. This is a space of presence, privacy, and freedom. Note that we might take a few shots for promotional purposes. Please let us know if you don’t want to be visible.
6. Stay with the Journey
An ecstatic dance set has an intentional arc — a beginning, a peak, and a landing; a purposeful journey through emotions. If you can, please arrive on time, stay until the end, and honour the collective container.
7. Care for Yourself & the Space
Rest when you need, hydrate, and be mindful of others. Together, we co-create this safe, vibrant dance floor.
Please take care of this amazing place: don’t step on the plants, and stay within the boundaries of Plot 9, and don’t enter the other plots.
