Christopher TImmermann | Bernardo Kastrup: DMT & the nature of reality

Christopher Timmermann (Imperial’s DMT Research Group) is one of the world's leading researchers on DMT and 5-MeO-DMT, perhaps the most powerful psychedelics we know. They are famous for catapulting people into hyper-real alternate worlds populated by seemingly autonomous beings, and “pure consciousness” experiences featuring a complete loss of ego, self and time.

Christopher led the first human neuroimaging studies on DMT, mapping what happens in the brain in these "more real than real” spaces. His latest work includes a study with a meditation lama comparing advanced meditation and psychedelic states.

Christopher will present new brain-imaging work, and discuss his influential research showing that psychedelic experiences can shift people’s most basic metaphysical beliefs away from hard physicalism.

About Christopher Timmerman

 Dr. Chris Timmermann is the co-director of the UCL Centre for Consciousness Research (uccr.uk) where he investigates how psychedelics and meditation can advance our understanding of the human mind and brain, as well as their impact in human flourishing. 

Chris has pioneered the first investigations into how the powerful psychedelics DMT and 5-MeO-DMT act in the brain, leading the DMT Research Group at Imperial College London until 2024. His work has focused on the neuroscience, phenomenology, and ethics of meditation and psychedelics to inform consciousness and mental health research. 

He is also the founder and director of the ECOH Foundation for the Science of Human Consciousness, in Latin-America (fundacionecoh.org).

Bernardo Kastrup's work has been leading the modern renaissance of the philosophical position, ‘metaphysical idealism’ that reality is essentially mental, an appearance in ‘mind.’  Bernardo has a Ph.D. in philosophy (ontology, philosophy of mind) and another Ph.D. in computer engineering (reconfigurable computing, artificial intelligence). As a scientist, Bernardo has worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Philips Research Laboratories (where the 'Casimir Effect' of Quantum Field Theory was discovered). Formulated in detail in many academic papers and books, his ideas have been featured on Scientific American, the Institute of Art and Ideas, the Blog of the American Philosophical Association and Big Think, among others.
