Residents have a choice between discovering local ecology and singing in harmony today. In Totnes, From the Ground Up: Soil Workshops at Yeoland begins with an interactive walk across the land led by soil ecology professor Karl Ritz. Families are welcome to join the walk to learn about the ground beneath their feet, which is followed by small, pre-bookable laboratory sessions exploring soil life through a microscope. Visitors staying into the evening are advised to bring a torch.

Further up the road at Ashburton Town Hall, the Over the Moon (Drop-in Community) Choir meets for its monthly afternoon gathering. Run by Faith Burch, the group welcomes anyone who wants to sing for fun without auditions or long-term commitments. Singers will learn harmony songs from around the world alongside simple vocal techniques, offering a relaxed way to make music together.

Feedback report

Recent community gatherings in the area have drawn warm responses from those taking part. At the Moor Imagination Centre, The Mythic Parlour - Stories For All welcomed a crowd of children of different ages for an engaging storytelling session. Families appreciated how well the young audience was kept entertained through songs, tales and quick-witted, humorous improvisation.

Meanwhile, at The Woodland Presents in North Woods, Dartington, people gathered for the Samhain Ceremony. Moving between indoor and outdoor spaces, the ceremony offered a shared circle, a central fire, and time to exchange reflections and food afterwards. Participants valued the strong sense of connection and the inclusive welcome, especially an expansive understanding of ancestry that embraced the natural world and helped people feel they belonged. While visitors praised the woodland setting and careful hosting, some suggested clearer directions for first-time arrivals and noted the evening ran slightly late.
